Overall an extremely satisfying listen....
Super recording from Nick Beggs and crew. I really like this disc better than the other one by this band that I own ('Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me'). While I loved 'Do Nothing...' this one spoke to me more. The lyrics here are very good and the musicianship is stunning. That Marco Minnemann is present on this CD just seals the deal for me, big fan of his. Marco adds guitar on a few of the tunes. The vocals, handled by Beggs, are great and somewhat sinister in spots. I can understand why Steven Wilson would recruit Beggs, his vocals and bass are top notch. Love it! And Beggs plays numerous instruments besides bass playing Chapman Stick, guitars, keys and programming and even didgeridoo! R King plays some definite strong guitar. There are three short instrumental pieces, "Saltatio," "Lament" and "The Andromeda Strain" on the disc all beautifully done. I really liked the album as a whole but particularly liked "The Dumbing Of The Stupid," "The Singing Fish Of Batticaloa" and the title track. Overall an extremely satisfying listen, recommended strongly.

FANTASTIC PROGRESSIVE WORK!!
I received this CD in the mail the same day I went to see Steve Hackett and his band play live here in Detroit, and we listened to it on the way to the show. I was absolutely blown away by what I heard! It tied in nicely with what I was about to witness at the Hackett concert. You see, two of the musicians in The Mute Gods also play in Steve Hackett's band! Bassist Nick Beggs and keyboardist Roger King. They are joined by the incredible drumming of Marco Minnemann (Joe Satriani, The Aristocrats, Steven Wilson). These guys just kill it! They have created some very cutting edge music here. They don't sound like anybody else. There are shades of what Nick and Roger do in Hackett's band, but they use it to make something completely original sounding here. Roger, who usually plays keys, even plays guitar on this and sounds very similar to Steve Hackett, and it blends perfectly with what they do. If you love Steve Hackett, Steven Wilson, or progressive music of that caliber, you will LOVE THIS!! I have actually listened to it about 4 times all the way through, and I have come to the conclusion that this is pure musical brilliance!! I am so impressed with this follow-up to the first album, (which I enjoyed - it is very good), but it didn't quite hit me as strongly as what they have done here. Seeing them play in Hackett's band after listening to this, just led to the band blazing ahead into new territory. VERY progressive indeed! So I have to recommend this album, as well as the new Steve Hackett album, "Night Siren", as being some of the most forward-thinking music out there right now. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy NOW!!!
