Neighborhood Sharks: Hunting with the Great Whites of California's Farallon Islands

I just read this gorgeous book to two of my young grandchildren; it totally captivated them. Exquisite illustrations and extremely informative scientific content make this book a rare find. Though one grandson is only three and some of the information was too detailed for him to comprehend, there was much that he could understand. It is a book that spans a broad age spectrum and can be enjoyed by a child over many years with increasing understanding as it is read and reread.Ms. Roy does not shrink from illustrating a shark's final kill of a seal. Her soft water color illustrations soften the violence while honestly portraying the harshness of nature and survival of the fittest.I ordered a second copy of this for our school's amazing elementary science teacher. She's a expert on sharks and she will love this book!

What an incredible book! I discovered the amazing art of Katherine Roy a few years ago, so I immediately pre-ordered Neighborhood Sharks when it became available on Amazon. My 8 year old daughter and I enjoyed reading this book together, as it is not only beautifully painted and illustrated, but it is also well written and very educational. I am so glad I bought this book, and now I am going to make sure my local library has it available as well!

My oldest was once a shark-obsessed Kindergartener--so I've read my share of shark books. But none like this one. I love that NEIGHBORHOOD SHARKS focuses on the great whites of California's Farallon Islands and tells their specific story. The way Roy plays with the juxtaposition of the these famed predators feasting just miles from their human neighbors in San Francisco makes for irresistible storytelling. This well-researched book unravels its information with perfect timing, drama and metaphor that makes its facts memorable and easy to digest. Above all, Katherine Roy's artwork is beautiful, reverent and joyous. It's a good mail day when a book like this arrives on your doorstep.

This is one of the rare books that captures and holds the attention of all three of my kids (4, 6, 9). The illustrations are stunning. My 4-year old was drawn into the detailed descriptions of shark anatomy, and how the author sometimes poses a question on one page to discuss or guess about before turning the page. My daughter is so excited about the San Francisco landmarks and explanations. And my 9-year-old is fascinated by the migration pattern and wanted to look on multiple maps. What a winner! I highly recommend this book to parents and teachers.

I love sharks and this book tells you in detail how each and every part of their body looks and what it does.

Loved it. The artwork is absolutely amazing, and the book is very well researched. I learned a lot about sharks, like that they have projectile mouths that they can shoot out and eat you with. It's like the ninja character Scorpion from Mortal Kombat with the rope that goes "Get over here!", but a shark. I mean, that's not even fair. My mouth can't do that. If I had to choose between getting in a fist fight with Scorpion from Mortal Kombat or a shark, I would totally choose to fight Scorpion from Mortal Kombat. Just saying.Great book!

It may not be safe to swim in the ocean, especially around the Farallone Islands, but it is safe to curl up with this great book and learn about the great white sharks. There's a boatload of information here about the sharks amid the lavish watercolor illustrations. Don't worry about a bit of blood in the water; jump in and prepare to be informed, entertained, and delighted!

They are extremely well written.
