But, not at ALL helpful...
I had great hope, but as other applications served as a caution, I "bought" the hype once again. Very mundane, far more talk, far too little useful demonstration of "let's do it". Three stars is very generous.

Great instruction
The author gives wonderful detail and her expertise in this must have book. Ive bought books from well known artists that always seem to leave something out of the demonstrations so you can never get it quite right such as colors etc. It is like they don't want you to know the exact way they do their art. Veronica on the other hand, tells it all. She wants to teach yiu what she knows. She gives you information on the different drawing implements and even the different types of tools used for shading The step by step demonstrations are easy to follow with a picture of each step. Her artwork that goes along with each demo is vibrant and beautiful , thus motivating the reader even more. I have many colored pencil instruction books but this one is literally my favorite. This book will be a joy for beginners and more advanced artists alike. Mrs. Winter's advice and techniques are the next best thing to actually being in an art class.

Somewhat disappointing
I was quite surprised at how long it took Amazon to ship this book until, upon receipt, I read the back page where it notes that the book was just printed. Amazon has a self-publishing option where books are generated on an as-ordered basis. They don't note this in the book details but instead say it is "In Stock". It was not in stock and they should say that it takes about 2 weeks to print it for the order. The book itself surprised me -- it is very small and thin, and I have to say, not worth the cost. It should be about $12.95, like other comparable small art books. Also, the flower on the cover is not part of the demonstrations -- instead, there are many black and white drawings of flowers. Also some color pencil drawings, which is what I was interested in. The text has some good tips and is a good collection of information found elsewhere; however, it is written like it has been translated from another language. For instance, the author refers to "art-making" quite often. This is not a term I've ever seen in a US book. Also, the text is really like a memoir, for the artist talks a lot about herself, all about what "I" does in her "art-making" and not a general observation. Though there are some good tips, and the demonstrations are fairly nice and helpful, I cannot say that I think this book is worth the money. If you want a book that helps with color pencil drawing and layering, I suggest something by Gary Greene or Bet Borgeson.

I should have listened to the reviews.
Very disappointing. What a lazy book. Speaking in an informal tone, show a lack of discipline and desire to really edit what you say and how you are teaching. The "step by step" instructions miss a lot of steps. Its like a recipe book without the instructions for the recipes. Most of them do NOT tell you what types of strokes were used, what SPECIFIC TECHNIQUES used on each flower, dont tell you how she blended colors (which color she put first, how she layered the colors, not even the specific colors that were used. many times shell say "I used a lot of greens and pinks and yellows!" Are you kidding! The marketing section basically gives you a list of where you can sell art: in coffee shops, libraries, art galleries (really?) and on social networking sites. Its about 1 1/2 pages! Dont waste your money!
