Zorro: Spaghetti Western Style
Made during the days when the Spaghetti Western was on its last legs, Zorro is an attempt to infuse the cultest aethstic with a beloved superhero of old. And it works brilliantly.Cheap, sometimes disjointed, dubbed within an each of its life. Zorro is still a marvel to watch. Alain Delon was born to play Zorro, just like he was born to play the anti-heros in the films of Jean Pierre Melville. Delon is clearly having the time of his life playing Zorro, he is over the top when out of the mask and he is challanging whilst wearing it. Stanley Baker, in his last film, is over the top and gnarls orders throughout the film.Sure this isn't a film for everyone (I don't see audiences raised on the Marvel films particulary enjoying this) But when it does go for spectacle it does so with a glint and wink. But what it does have are some of the most impressive sword fighting I've ever seen in a film. The last duel between Zorro and villian Huerta (Baker) is phenomenally constructed and the skill and marksmanship on display is brilliant and a throwback to the swashbucklers this film is trying to nod to.If you love Spaghetti Westerns, Alain Delon and swashbucklers... then this is the film for you. If not, then give it a rental, if you can.

Good guys wear black
After his friend is assassinated on the eve of his posting as the new governor of a corrupt town, Don Diego decides to fill his dead friends boots instead, and attempts to bring justice to the peasants of the area, whilst disguised as his crime fighting alter ego: Zorro. This upsets the corrupt officials, led by the vicious Col. Huerta, who pronounce Zorro a bandit and try to hang him...I'm not quite sure where to start with this, it's one of those movies that seemed to have been shown endlessly on tele during the early~mid eighties, during the school holidays, which therefore leaves me a little biased. But to those of you who are new to this, here's how it goes..The humour and style of Zorro are made up from a spaghetti western, crossed with ultra camp, Euro pop trash. There is a huge amount of slapstickery and silliness, almost to the dangerous point of getting up the audiences nose and making them cringe, but somehow it just about pulls it off!!Delon does a good job jumping about swashing his buckle aided by a 'comedy' mute, a 'comedy' dog, and a 'comedy' urchin, that is when he's not camping it up outrageously as the fake Governor De La Selerna. Which fortunately never quite sinks to the depths of being offensive. With his adversaries coming in the form of some 'comedy' guards, a 'comedy' fat bloke and... err... Stanley Baker (in what was to sadly be his last film role) playing the mean and scowly Col. Huerta, to perfection. When that is, he's given something to deliver. The end sword fight is really good, making use of multiple weapons and sets, and generally speaking there's never a dull moment, but whether or not it justifies it's two hour runtime is debatable and the film probably could have done with tighter editing. With that said though, Zorro is an enjoyable, if rather daft family friendly action adventure, which probably could win over many a new convert if shown today ~ and just as likely, annoy just as many of those that take either themselves or their cinema seriously. There are so many terrible hats in this, it made me wonder if Thomas 'cr*p hat' Milian was about to make a cameo, but sadly he didn't. Oh yeah and the extremely memorable/catchy/awful theme tune beggars belief! The dvd print (from Somerville House) is pretty good, clear and widescreen, not to mention also being the longer version.Absolutely recommended to fans of Terence Hill and Bud Spencer, Lester's Musketeer films and Nacho Libre!4.25/5.

Phenomenal! The full uncut 2012 version. Ignore the out of date reviews of earlier releases.
Wow is all I can say. This is such a fine rendition of Zorro. I came across the film by chance, and am still scratching my head as to why I had not been introduced to it earlier. It was directed by Duccio Tessari who co-wrote A Fistful Of Dollars, hence why the film has a Spaghetti-Western style and look. His other films have a unique look and feel too!I am certainly going to watch his other works as I am so impressed! This is a film that provides enjoyment on multiple levels and is a singular film. Alain Delon makes for an outstanding Zorro. He captures the essence of the character and as for his appearance, women will be thrilled! He moves so well, exquisite dress sense ; and the humour as well as wit are perfect. The sword fights are so well done! And the film has a wonderful romantic air about it.I have to say that Ottavia Piccolo is gorgeous, and well known in her country of Italy. She looks like a Latina. I never understand why they cast non-Latin actors or actresses for Latin parts, like they did in earlier adaptations. She has a beautiful chemistry with Alain Delon. In fact, the whole casting in this film is a perfect fit for what style they were going for.And last but not least, it is nice how they captured an authentic Spanish look for this film. It really has that Latin atmosphere, and let's not forget, that Zorro is the original romantic hero in film and the style is timeless as is the character. In fact, Bob Kane, Batman's creator, admitted how much Batman was influenced by Zorro. The truth must be said!High time this film gets the credit it deserves. So good to see an untouched by Hollywood version.

Great classic movie, but...
One of the best movies from the 70's but the quality of image and sound just suck.I bought the dual - Blu-Ray+DVD, but there is no quality difference between them, image or sound. Also no subtitles, and the sound sometimes is like an old scratched LP.

Bad edition of a great movie
The film itself is great, but poorly published. The image quality is poor, there are no subtitles.

Poor quality digitization
The film is fine (I saw it years ago), a fun family adventure film (though the opening is probably too intense for younger children), but the digitization is shockingly bad. Daytime scenes almost whiteout at pints, flesh tones are more orange than trump and the footage is so blurry it often seems like the camera has been smeared in Vaseline! As a one-off rental it was grudgingly adequate, but if I had purchased it, I would be asking for a refund.
