Informational, if not redundant

I actually purchased this book for a grad class book review project. The first 3rd of this book was informational and helpful in guiding my understanding of ASD. This is especially geared towards elementary Ed teachers, though others may find useful ideas (I'm preschool and many things are well above that level). However, I knew from the description that would be the case. I was hopeful that I could glean some educational ideas or tips but if you teach or know what developmentally appropriate practice is, then you are doing it right. If you do teach elementary, then there actually may be some good ideas for teaching especially with writing. There is a lot of overlapping/redundancies but I suppose you could say its thorough. For example, they talk about social skill building in the context of social curricula, treatment/therapy, and classroom strategies. A lot of this is the same information but maybe extended within the given context. Probably my biggest complaint. If the larger chunk of the book would have just been concise resources or even missing I'd give it 5 stars.Because of the organization and information in the first chunk of the book, I will definitely keep this on hand as a resource. I knew little before about ASD (especially in retrospect) and I have a much better understanding now, so I did get what I needed out of it.

This book is a great guide for educator's in how to accommodate and instruct children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The author's are knowable in the area as they have dealt with ASD in classrooms and with some of their children. The only reason I didn't give this book five stars is because some of the information given is very repetitive. All in all, this is a good read if you are interested in educating or gaining sight into children with ASD.

Excellent

Excellent book for those familiar with Autism and those that are not. Many great strategies and insights. Many thanks for writing such a good reference book and just a good read.

Good intro guide for general educators

This book is a great introduction into what a student with autism will mean in your general education class. If you are unfamiliar with the needs of students with high functioning autism, this will be a great fit.

Autism In Your Classroom: A General Educator's Guide to Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

I found a lot of the information to be very helpful; not just for my class but because I have a family member Asperger's.

Outdated

I was required to purchase for a course aimed at educators and am extremely disappointed. The information regarding diagnosis is outdated and the tone of the writing throughout the book is extremely negative regarding individuals with autism. It also lists chelation as a "controversial treatment" for autism, although it had been deemed neither safe nor effective and warned against by the American Academy of Pediatrics for 6 years prior to the publication of this book. Do not recommend as a reliable source of information for any professional. Autistic individuals are not incapable, nor are they a burden or annoyance to "deal with" in your classroom/your family, as this book would lead you to believe.

Informative

Is a very informative book for someone who has little experience in the area of Autism. Clear direct writing which makes for an easy read considering the material.

Will begin a class with colleagues soon and this book is a big help. More and more of our students are somewhere on the spectrum.
