Scrape the Willow Until It Sings: The Words and Work of Basket Maker Julia Parker Paperback – Box set, August 15, 2013

I took a basket class from Julia some years ago and it was a delight to see her get the recognition she deserves! I have learned basketry from her daughter & granddaughter as well. We have had the privilege to have had them come to our schools and introduce their culture and traditions.

I just heard the author present the story of this book. The book would be of interest to basketmakers and basket lovers, but primarily it is the story of indigenous people in 20th century California and the race to preserve culture. Julia Parker's octogenarian wisdom is the foundation of this book. While she continues to make baskets, her primary work is preserving the diversity of basket weaving that reflects the cultures of Native America. The book is filled with beautiful photos of beautiful objects and with ancient wisdom.

Well written, an invitation into the native world of basketry.
