Excellent!!
I am a student of Michael Mclaughlin's, not only is he a great teacher, but his book teaches you everything from the beginning. I had never even looked at any type of database or sql code in my life, and after this class and using this book, I now feel that I could get a job with the skills learned from this book alone. If you ever need to look up a particular topic, the index is amazing. He has example code of each topic in his book, so you can know how to use and implement it. This book deserves it's 5-star rating and if you get it and use it, it will teach you tons.

Great book!
Oracle Database 11g & MySQL 5.6 Developer Handbook has awakened in me a great interest in database applications. It is well written. Even though English is not my primary language, as I read, the concepts and examples flowed smoothly from chapter to chapter. My understanding has increased and I have been able to visualize the examples presented. This book contains both ORACLE and MySQL examples. It will help you see how each work as well as the similarities and differences between the two. This book will save you time from doing searches on the web about ORACLE and MySQL to understand the fundamental concepts of databases.

Terrible for learning the subject.
This book teaches both MySQL and Oracle Database 11g in a very interesting way. Each chapter involves both languages... It might be something for an experienced database administrator might find interesting to see the differences compared side by side. However, this is the worst way to learn databases because it can be very confusing.I'm not sure what audience this book was intended for (I didn't read the introduction, it may say something of it there) but I can tell you regardless of it's intentions it's not for the beginner. I'm writing this review as though it was intended for the beginner since that is how it was introduced to me in a course designed by the author (At BYU-Idaho). I and the rest of the class find it the most confusing book for someone new to the subject. If you have a choice do not by this book! There are many, many other books much better. For example, if you want to learn MySQL get a book dedicated to it like the Murach MySQL book. That book is written to actually teach the subject, not just be one large academic dictionary of two different databases.

Sorce code is not available
In the introduction section instructions on where to download Data Model used in the book are outdated. There is no information on writers blog or book publisher website where to download source code from.update:Author was very quick to respond to my request regarding the source code, you can download source code used in the book from his blog[...]

A great book to now Oracle and MySQL inside out
This book is very detailed in how Oracle and MySQL work, their important differences from the programming point of view, and how to use those tools with clever techniques that every IT professional would appreciate to have. This is the kind of book you learn something every time you read it. It will set the reader apart from the other IT professionals.

"What you talkin' 'bout, Michael McLaughlin?!"
This is a very difficult book to learn from. I was using this book for an Into to Databases class online. The book constantly switches between talking about MySQL 5.6 and Oracle Datebase 11g. After a few chapters of reading you can't differentiate between the two whatsoever.

handbook
Use this on a regular basis for script creation and expanding my knowledge of sql. No time for formal training so handbook is next best thing.

Too much information
First of all, I never received the book. I had to buy the kindle version so I could study for the class. Second, the book is overwhelming. There is too much information to absorb in each chapter.

Make sure this is what you need.
I actually bought this book in preperation for the MySQL 5.6 Programmer certification, so I might not be all that fare on the writer complaining about the book...It contains a lot of comparison between MySQL and Oracle, but not enough detail to be useful in regards of the exam.If you actually have a mixed environment with the two databases this book may highlite the differences, although the writer is actually mocking MySQL, and clearly sees it as inferior to the Oracle RDBSM. (IMHO)
