Robin Hood (A Stepping Stone Book)

Nearly perfect for the intended audience
I bought this book to read with my 7 year old, and I am pretty well pleased with it. The vocabulary is simple, the sentences are short (and often start with the word "and"; my grade school teachers would be appalled), but the tale is told effectively and accessibly for young readers. Also, unlike some other books for young readers (e.g. the Droon series), this book does not simplify to the point of eliminating all of the descriptive passages. When Robin disguises himself as a musician, he wears "feathers of many colors" and carries a harp. There's not enough description to interfere with the pace for impatient children, but there is enough detail to hang your imagination off of.As for the story, there were some frustrating omissions. The origin of Robin Hood is given only a few paragraphs in the introduction, and the tales of how Will Scarlet and Friar Tuck joined the band are missing. The book only tells how Little John joined. The rest just sort of show up later in the story. I'm sure that was done to keep the pace of the story moving, but it would have been good to have more of the stories written in this same style. The rest of the story is a reasonably solid narration of the traditional tale of Robin Hood, with no more than the usual level of variation. I definitely recommend this book as a good way to introduce children to the story of Robin Hood, though I like the Dover Children's Thrift Classics edition slightly better.

new and colorful
I have a collection of vintage classics. I thought this would be a good addition. It is the same story, but is very bright and colorful, unlike the older versions. I did enjoy reading it, especially since I tried and failed to read the book. But it won't be kept with the old collection.

Little boys should like this one.
The stories are well-planned and well-written, and the 8-year-old I am reading it with is really enjoying it. If I could change anything, however, I would have made clearer drawings to illustrate it. Some of them seem sort of messy, dashed off quickly and almost seeming as if the artist had not been sure of what he should be depicting. For instance, in the illustration of one of the merry men having his monk's robe disguise ripped off, you can hardly tell what is happening and what part of it is the robe. The little boy reading the book with me didn't seem to mind that, however, and we had some fun conversations as we guessed at the particulars of each illustration.

A great classic for young kids.
My 2nd grade son absolutely loves this book. I am so glad that they have made it so that even children can enjoy the classics. His favorite character is Little John. So glad we got this.

My prolific reading grandson was so excited to read this book when it arrived. He loved it and has read it to his younger brother now. Good series!

Loved it!
Excellent read, well written, very funny version, I've read a few, and no mention of bad King John, definitely the bad sheriff of Nottingham, and three excellent archers by play on names of famous people Ingle noted for her time. I recommend this book. Great read for children as well. Short to read for adult. Longer read for children depending on reading skills.

Never thought I'd see this again!
Picked up this magazine when I was 9 at a fete in Racketts at Hythe nr. Southampton, England for sixpence - that's 6d., not the decimal rubbish!Loved it, lost it when I was 14 and we moved to Southampton (someone's gotta live there, I suppose) and blow me down and pick me up if I didn't notice WH Smith were selling Classics Illustrated and Robin Hood was a back number!Beautifully recreated, glossy and colorful - not sixpence anymore, but worth the few dollars more! :-D
