A Classic Hypnotherapy Text
I was a bit put off by the high price of this book, but it was definitely worth the read. For anyone interested in the possibilities of hypnosis for modern medicine and dentistry, this book is a must-read.Dave Elman was a master hypnotherapist, teaching physicians, dentists and psychologists back in the 1950s how to do what they should already have been taught in their training. This book is full of stories, examples and dialogues with clients that demonstrate his ability to work successfully with a stunning array of people. It is truly amazing that it has taken over 50 years since his work in order for hypnosis to begin emerging as the tool for personal transformation that it is. Although the history of hypnosis is much older that that, it has long suffered the indignity of scorn by those who don't understand it, fear it or simply believe it can't really work. The book gives examples of induction methods, including what is now called the classic "Dave Elman Induction", as well as the use of hypnosis in dozens of physical and mental conditions. Since these uses are reserved today only for licensed professionals, and since licensed professionals usually shy away from or shun anything that is not considered mainstream, hypnosis is most often used today for behavior modification issues, such as weight loss or smoking cessation.Yet this book is still valuable to the non-professional, as it demonstrates to the reader the tremendous ability of the mind to control physical experience, habit patterns and emotional reactions.Although this book is fascinating, without the guidance of a live instructor it cannot really be used as a practical learning tool. Although it seems there is almost nothing Dave Elman can't handle successfully with hypnosis, the reader may be left feeling a bit inadequate, as his physician students often did, when trying to duplicate his efforts. Obviously there is a lot to be said for intuitive skill in this area.

THE Reference since 1964
If you are into hypnosis and hypnotherapy, this is a must read. Elman understood like no one else that Regress to Cause is the most efficient, goal and result oriented approach to helping people. He was a task master in the Regress to Cause philosophy. Much unlike other approaches, his kind of work is repeatable, it's a process and easy to learn. You do not have to be a genius in story telling, but much rather follow a process that leads you to successful interventions. This book has so many insights, it should be mandatory reading.I can only recommend it.

Reading it a second time
I loved this book and am reading through it a second time so I can take notes. Elman shares his wisdom and advice for everything from somnambulism to the Elsdaile state. He also offers a chapter each on common health problems, ranging from allergies to phobias to sleep problems. It's funny to read a book written in the 60s, because you can see how far we've come as far as queer and women's liberation. Totally great book!

The most exciting book on hypnosis I have ever read! I wish I had come across this book when I first began to study hypnosis.I feel like everything else I have ever learned about hypnosis is only half truths and ego tripping compared to this. This is the real deal - forget everything else you have ever learnt about hypnosis as you read this book - you will finally understand exactly what hypnosis is and how simple it really is to use it.You will be an incredible hypnotist if you do!

Good book, Informative!
Hypnotherapy by Dave Elman Is a good book for anyone who is learning the craft of hypnosis or hypnotherapy. Although many of the attitudes reflected in the book are from 1960, The book introduces the reader to many of the inductions still in use today
