Hawaii Five-O: Season 5

THE GOOD:This whole set - season 5 - is the best so far; I have the first four seasons, and this one has some of the better episodes I've seen. As others have previously stated, the "V for Vashon" episodes by themselves make the entire set worth it; that trilogy, along with some of the Wo Fat episodes, were the best that Five-0 had to offer.I think this is the first set I've seen that doesn't seem really dated. Mind you, I actually sometimes enjoy the dated quality of some of these classic TV shows, which is why I bother to buy them in the first place - they're time capsules. But it just seems that season 5 stands the test of time and is a bit "grittier" than the early Five-0 seasons, IMO. Not necessarily better, just different - and very interesting.I was also pleased to discover that I'd never before seen quite a few of the episodes on this set. For some reason quite a few of these shows got skipped over the years in syndication (at least in my viewing area), and I've watched a ton of Five-0 reruns.Some of my favorite episodes in this set include:"Death is a Company Policy" (I got quite a kick seeing George Chakiris in the lead, and I rediscovered that Herman "Squirmin' Herman" Wedemeyer can really act!)"Pig in a Blanket" (Danno shoots another kid!)"The Jinn Who Clears the Way" (a very good Wo Fat episode)"V for Vashon" trilogy (classic stuff)"The Odd Lot Caper" (gotta love armed robbery on Five-0!)"Percentage" (a good ol' fashioned gambling-murder drama)"Engaged to be Buried" (Chin Ho has problems)Really, with just a few exceptions, all of the episodes are really good.THE BAD:While I wouldn't say that there is really anything exceptionally bad about this set, some of the episodes, well, I'm not sure what they were thinking.For instance, the episode "Death Wish on Tantalus Mountain" misses the mark. It stars Ricardo Montalban in the lead, and although it's not nearly as good as another episode he starred in - "Samurai" in season 1 - at least he isn't made up to look Japanese. Poorly developed characters, really bad musical score, and no real edge to the script. Some of the acting is good, particularly the final scene with Ricardo's son. But overall the show just seems really cheesy. I don't know - maybe it's me.Although I liked the episode "Here Today...Gone Tonight" (starring Five-0 regular guest star Monte Markham), I felt that the helicopter twist was far-fetched and not very creative; they could have done a better job of making that believable, because the rest of the show was very strong.And I have no idea why they wanted to rehash another sniper saga in the same bunker we saw in "And I Want Some Candy, and a Gun That Shoots" in season 4. "Litte Girl Blue" has poorly developed characters, sketchy plot, lots of exposition, and Jackie Coogan just mails in his performance - which is understandable since he isn't required to do anything except get chest pains.Also, although I thought the encoding was good throughout the series, some episodes contain scenes that don't appear to be properly color-corrected. I just chalked this up to some of the original masters being damaged/faded, and it appears that could be the case. Still, these glitches are few and far between.THE UGLY:Good Lord (no pun intended), who dressed McGarrett in "V for Vashon: The Patriarch"!! That Tyrolean hat, with the white suit and ascot, was just absurd. Even in 1972 that outfit would have been a big stretch. I think Marie Lord may have had more influence on Jack's wardrobe than we may want to believe...LOL!=======================All in all, this is an excellent DVD set, and I'm really bummed because I just finished watching all 24 episodes and want to keep going! I can't wait for season 6, so I hope CBS sees the demand and gets cracking.I'm looking forward to seeing a couple of Five-0 episodes that I found particularly creepy, and although I'm not sure in which season(s) they appear, I know they're coming soon. One of them stars Danny Goldman as a copycat psycho killer who mocks McGarrett by recreating murders. Another great episode stars Slim Pickens as the father in a redneck family that just goes off in Hawaii, murdering tourists - complete sociopaths, deranged characters even by today's TV standards. I'm really pumped to see those episodes again.Aloha!

I grew up watching this show and remembered it as one of the many great things on television in the 70s. I remembered it as one of the most exciting, realistic, and gripping police dramas ever to air. I am happy to say my memory served me well and Hawaii Five-O is everything I thought it to be. Jack Lord did a simply superb job capturing the character of Steve McGarret. Lord had presence and that larger-than-life persona that the true star has; and he could act, as well! He was able to convey a vitality and personality that made the "Super Cop" McGarret completely believable despite the character's immense heroic preportions. You have no doubt McGarret is going to bring down the bad guys, no doubt that he is always more than a match for them.I think it illustrative of the true talent of the writers, producers, actors, and directors of this classic series that, while it was "gritty" and realistic among its peers, it maintained its integrity and did not resort to the overly graphic and coarse content seen in such crime dramas today. Virtually each episode keeps you on the edge of your seat and keeps the adrenaline running without the shock effects and cheap, vulgar tactics most television uses today. Jack Lord and his supporting cast were all class acts, as was this wonderful, unforgettable series. I feel truly blessed that I grew up with television shows like these!

The Five-0 team is settling in and meshing well, now. Starting in the 4th season, McGarrett, while still not above taking the palace steps two at a time, has seemed more like a lead investigator/detective lieutenant. Most of all, the stories are becoming more challenging. It really takes McGarrett's cunning to outfox the Vashons. Danno and Ben outfox criminal minds, as well.We are seeing a shift away from the star format and toward an ensemble format. I do wish that Kono were in the ensemble. I miss him, although I like Ben, who is one sharp cookie. Duke, who is on loan from the HPD, while quiet and unassuming, is sharp and one of my favorite characters.The only down side, as I see it, is that the Hollywood editors just can't seem to comprehend that, from the palace, one does not drive past Dillingham Fountain to get to Pier 39. Those stock photos must have made Len Freeman and Jack Lord furious!Let me not close without remarking on the scenery we are seeing this season. We venture beyond Honolulu and are on Tantalus Mountain and high above Makapu`u Point, looking down on the lighthouse. Are these roads open to the public? If so, they don't appear on typical tourist maps, at least not the ones I've seen. Very interesting and enlightening, to say nothing of awesomely beautiful.Yes, Season 5 is a winner! Bring on Season 6!

Loved the fifth season of Hawaii Five-0, as well as the first four seasons! I pre-ordered this season, and our family is already watching the fifth season for the second time since we received it. The quality of the DVDs is very good.People should wait until DVDs have been released and they've seen them before giving negative reviews; it just doesn't make sense to pan a show before it has been released based on editing of a different series.My family has immensely enjoyed the DVD releases. The scenery is gorgeous, the stories are excellent, and the Five-0 team stands for moral integrity as well as taking responsibility for your decisions.Thoroughly enjoyed the Vashon trilogy in season 5; the thought of Steve McGarrett in jail is too hard to fathom. Al Harrington joins the Five-0 team in the fifth season, and James MacArthur takes a more active role as boss in the field.Just wish CBS would release the remaining seasons and do it quickly. One or two seasons a year is just way too slow!!

Ich mag die "neue" Five-O-Serie - sehr sogar! Und das hat nichts, aber auch gar nichts mit einem möglichen Vergleich zur "Ursprungsserie" mit Jack Lord & Co. zu tun.Beide Serien sind "Kinder" ihrer Zeit und können friedlich und einträchtig nebeneinander stehen bleiben. Beide Serien sind meiner Ansicht nach auf ihre Art und Weise herausragend aus dem Allerlei vieler anderer, zeitgleich produzierter Shows. Was nun die Neuinterpretation mit Alex O'Loughlin und seinem Team angeht, so sticht diese für mich durch mehrere Faktoren heraus:Sie kommt stets mit einer gewissen Leichtigkeit daher, egal, wie ultraböse oder supergefährlich der Gegner der Woche gerade ist. Das liegt natürlich an den Drehbüchern, die keine Zweifel daran aufkommen lassen, wer hier die Guten sind. McGarrett, Danno Williams, Kono, Chin, Max und Lou haben eigene Wesenszüge, sind aber stets gleichberechtigt im Team vertreten. Der Derrick-Effekt ("Harry, hol' schon mal den Wagen") ist so ausgeschlossen. Unrealistisch? Wer weiß! Diese "ohana" (Familie) ist für mich jedenfalls wert, begleitet zu werden.Eine Frau im Stamm-Team, und nun auch noch die Rückkehr von McGarretts Flamme Catherine sind für sich genommen schon ein gewaltiger Unterschied zum männer-lastigen "Original". Die Frozzeleien und das "Gezicke" zwischen Steve und Danno sind wie aus einer eigenen Liga (mega-unterhaltsam und doch immer mit nachdenklicher Note).Jede Folge macht ordentlich Tempo: Schnelle Schnitte, ohne bei mir als Zuschauer Hektik auszulösen, lassen die Extraportion Kurzweil aufkommen. Jede Folge zeigt ein Intro, mit dem "typische" hawaiianische Bilder transportiert werden, wie in einem Tourismus-Video. Unterlegt sind diese dann auch noch mit schmissiger aktueller Popmusik. Warum auch nicht? Wer schon mal auf Hawai'i war, kann bestätigen, dass diese grandiosen Naturschauplätze, diese entspannten Surfer-Typen und diese, je nach Geschmack, beachtlichen oder widerlichen Hoteltürme direkt an den Stränden von Honolulu tatsächlich vorhanden und zum Greifen nah sind.Was mich zum Highlight der Blu Ray-Edition bringt (um die uns Deutsche übrigens sogar die Amerikaner beneiden, weil es in den U.S.A. nur DVD-Ausgaben zu kaufen gibt): Knackscharfes Bild mit satten (absichtlich in der Post Production unnatürlich übersättigten) Farben und ein kristallklarer Sound.Hawaii-Five-O wird die westliche Kulturlandschaft auf keine Weise revolutionieren - wer aber perfekt gemachte Unterhaltung (mit gelegentlichen Logik-Löchern) auf aktuellem Stand der Technik haben will, sollte hier zuschlagen, eintauchen und genießen...Mahalo, liebe Macher dieser Blu Rays (und natürlich der Show) - und "Aloha, haole" jedem, der jetzt erstmals zum Kauf einer dieser tollen Boxen motiviert ist!

I am collecting all the original Hawaii Five-O Seasons as it was, in my opinion, the best Series ever shown. The acting was good, thecharacters believable and the plots interesting. The show had top writing teams and surpassed many series that are on TV today. Thisis only my opinion, but I was interested in it when a friend raved about it. She watches the new Series of the same name and said thatI should see the first one as it was totally different and just as enjoyable to her. I'm hooked as the saying goes and can't wait untilI have the complete series of 12 Seasons. That is a long time for a series to run so it must have been a winner. Buy the first one andI am sure you will become a fan, too. Trust Amazon to have nothing but the best entertainment!
