Incarnate

This story is certainly one that draws the reader in to caring about the characters - always a good test of a readable book. I enjoyed it very much and have just pre-ordered the second one in the trilogy, ASUNDER. I hope Ana makes it through to find out what she really is.

I loved the story. Absolutely amazing. But I think my book missed a chunk of pages at the end.Spoiler alert for people who don't want to know some of the ending.My book stops just as Ana enters the temple and meets the councillor. Only when reading the next book in the series did I realise I missed a whole bit about Menehem and Sylph.Very disappointed. I hope I don't have to buy it again just to read the ending.

As soon as I saw this book, I was in love with the cover. When I looked at the blurb, I knew I needed to read INCARNATE. I was on edge for weeks knowing it was so close, yet so far.I ordered it and waited in anticipation for it to be delivered.It wasn't until about the 6th of February that I received it. At which point it had already been out for nearly a week and I was itching for it to hurry up.Thankfully, I had just become free to read it when it got here.I have to say, Jodi Meadows is one of my new favourite authors. I love the way she expertly crafted this story. It was something that had me hooked immediately and I had to read it every spare moment I got.It took me longer to read than I had hoped. I had my son's birthday on Saturday so I had a few hours where I could not pick it up. But after he had gone to bed, I managed to finish it off. Now I am just dying for the next book.I don't want to give too much of this story away, for obvious reasons. You need to sit and read it yourself. But let me warn you, make sure you have a few hours spare because you will NOT want to put it down.There were things about INCARNATE that had me laughing. Then there were those that had me crying. Whilst other things made me so mad I wanted to punch someone in the face.Ana is our main character and without telling you too much about her, I want to point out that I am amazed at the kind of person she became. She went through a lot and came out better than a lot of people would have done.Her mother, Li (though I hardly think she deserves the title 'mother') is an awful woman who reminds me of my own mother,Li thought very little of Ana, as she believes she took Ciana's place - Ciana should have been reincarnated and Ana should not exist. So when Ana decides to leave home and head for Heart, Li doesn't stop her. She gives her a compass and tells her to be on her way.Only the compass is broken - it's just a good job Ana realises this before she gets too lost.The struggles Ana goes through with Li are similar to struggles I had with my mother growing up, so I really empathise with her character. But I think that pretty much like myself, if it weren't for Li's awful ways, Ana may not have ended up the person she is today. It's our experiences in life that shape us for the future. So she may hate Li - and indeed she has every right - but that which does not break you makes you stronger.On the whole this story was unique, intriguing and has you turning pages quickly because you are on the edge of your seat wanting to know what happens next.The pace of the book itself, I would say it is fast-paced and full of exciting discoveries. Yet the pace of the world building and such is slow enough to give you the bigger picture.I found myself falling in love with the sweet Sam. The relationship between him and Ana - it wasn't a rushed 'girl meets boy and BAM they fall in love' - it was sweet and slow building. I thought Sam was an incredible character. There's more to that boy than meets the eye.There were some pretty great characters throughout this book. I liked a lot of them and hated a few of the others. Yet whether I liked or hated them, they were believable. What I mean to say is, it was as though they were real people. Not something an author creates, but someone you might come across in your everyday life.As if this wasn't all enough, there were dragons and sylph and other things to add to the excitement and adventure.So if you want something unique and refreshing, pick up INCARNATE. You won't be sorry you did.

I feel quite sad to only give this book three stars because I thought going into it that it would definitely end up being a five star book given all the hype and the reviews and people I know who rave about it. But honestly, I don't see what all the fuss and hype was about. Yes its a good book, and has a unique premise, but I don't think its anything special and certainly not in the same league as other YA fantasy stories out there.The story is set in a world where everyone knows everyone because they are reincarnated souls who have continued to live over and over again for 5000 years. That is until Ana is born and when they scan her she doesn't register as anyone they know, she is in fact a newsoul. And unfortunately she has taken the place of another soul who should have been reincarnated but never was. And for this reason she is shunned, people hate and distrust her, she has changed the natural order of things and therefore spends the first 18 years of her life living in almost complete solitude with her mother (who hates her just as much as everyone else) far away from everyone else in the wilderness. The book begins when Ana decides to leave home to head for the big city to try and make a life for herself and also to try to discover why she exists and what happened to the soul who's place she took.I did really enjoy reading about this society, the perfect world. It was really well thought out and different and I really liked a lot of the characters in that world. The friends Ana makes in the city, Sam, Stef and the others help to show that not everyone hates Ana and that there is hope for her to integrate with society. There is a threat all the way through of a dragon attack which added a little suspense and there was a few secrets that needed to be discovered that also held my attention.However, Ana, the main character was really really lacking in growth and development and had a really bad personality in my opinion. When I'm reading a first person narrative I do feel its important to connect with that person, to feel like I agree with their actions or at least understand why do and say the things they do. But Ana was just so infuriating. She was petulant and childish. She had outbursts all the time that seemed to come out of nowhere and she constantly behaved ungratefully to the one person who treated her with respect - Sam. He saved her life over and over. He took her in when no one else wanted the responsibility and he genuinly liked her. But she took everything he said the wrong way and snapped at him, stormed off from him and just generally acted like a child. I wanted to reach in and shake her. The other problem I had with this book was the pacing. It began well and it ended well. But for about 300 pages in the middle, pretty much nothing happened other than Ana having lessons with various people in the city, moping about how she is a 'no soul' and generally behaving stupidly.So, to sum up, if this book wasn't so hyped before I picked it up I probably wouldn't have been as disappointed. As it is, I think its an ok story with a good premise and world building but with terrible pacing issues and a protagonist in need of a good punch in the face.

Wie würde man sich fühlen, wenn man in einer Welt lebt, in der es 1 Million Menschen gibt, die seit 5 Millionen Jahren zusammen wiedergeboren werden und sich an alle vorangegangenen Leben erinnern können? Kriege sind spätestens dann sinnlos, wenn man sich 60 Jahre später wieder den gleichen Feinden gegenüber sieht. Und würde man wirklich mehrere Leben ein und der selben Sache widmen oder immer etwas Neues versuchen? Irgendwann kennt man alle anderen und weiß, wie sie reagieren - vielleicht nicht jeden der Million, aber wohl doch die meisten.In genau eine solche Welt wird Ana geboren - die erste Seele, die nicht seit 5 Millionen Jahren Wiedergeboren wird. Und das ist ein Problem. Sie hat eine der alten Seelen ersetzt und die meisten der anderen Wiedergeborenen sind ihr gegenüber mißtrauisch oder hasserfüllt. Daher lebt sie mit ihrer Mutter auch alleine im Wald. Allerdings ist die Mutter alles andere als liebevoll und Ana packt ihre Sachen an ihrem 18 Geburtstag und sucht lieber ihr Glück in dicksten Winter, als länger bei ihrer Mutter zu bleiben.Kaum ist sie unterwegs wird sie von einem schattenartigen Wesen, dass Brandwunden hinterlässt verfolgt und ihr einziger Ausweg ist der Sprung in einen See. Bevor sie ertrinken kann, wird sie von Sam gerettet.Sam ist der erste freundliche Mensch in ihrem Leben. Auch wenn sie mißtrauisch ist, hat sie kaum eine andere Wahl als ihm zu trauen. Sie ist verletzt und weiß nicht, wie sie in der Wildnis überleben soll. Sam pflegt sie und nimmt sie mit in die Hauptstadt, damit sie endlich mehr über ihre seltsame Geburt und das verschwinden der anderen Seele erfahren kann. Aber das Leben in Heart ist alles andere als einfach. Zwischen politischen Auseinandersetzungen, jemanden der sie töten möchte, ihren Gefühlen für Sam, dem merkwürdigen Tempel mit dem Herzschlag und den Drachenangriffen weiß Ana irgendwann nicht mehr, wem sie trauen kann.Die Welt ist faszinierend und wenn man das erste Kapitel hinter sich gebracht hat und Sam auftaucht, ist das Buch spannend und man kann nicht genug davon bekommen.Ich bin schon sehr auf den zweiten und dritten Teil gespannt.

BuchgestaltungEgal wie bezaubernd das Cover auch sein mag, ich persönlich finde,das es kaum etwas mit dem Buch zu tun hat. Die Schmetterlingsmaske könnte das Symbol für Ana sein, wird aber in der Geschichte selbst nur 1-2 erwähnt. Trotzdem ist es ein Eyecatcher und der Titel passt wie die Faust aufs Auge. Wunderschön ist auch der Schmetterling unter dem Schutzumschlag und die liebevolle Gestaltung eines jeden Kapitelanfangs, da lohnt sich das HC wirklich!MeinungZunächst einmal muss ich sagen, das ich Jodi Meadows Schreibstil liebe. Ich bin mir zwar nicht ganz sicher, was ihn denn so besonders macht, aber die Autorin hat so eine wundervolle Art Atmosphäre aufzubauen und das in leisen und nachdenklichen Tönen. Beim Lesen kam es mir oft so vor, als stecke selbst hinter alltäglichen Dingen ein Fünkchen Moral und/oder Erkenntnis'Die Geschichte von Ana beginnt an dem Tag, an dem sie das Haus ihrer Mutter verlässt, weil sie herausfinden will, wer oder was sie ist. Denn in Anas Welt werden die Menschen immer und immer wieder geboren ' und das schon seit einem halben Jahrtausend. Ana aber ist anders, denn sie ist keine wiedergeborene Seele, sondern eine neue, die eine alte verdrängt hat und somit ein Außenseiter in der Gesellschaft der New Souls. Die Thematik: was würde man tun, wenn man für immer lebt? Wird hier auf ein ganz neues Level gehoben. Denn: was würdest du tun, wenn du wüsstest, das dir abertausende Leben zur Verfügung stehen? Das du wieder kommt, mit all deinen Erinnerungen und das Leben niemals endet? Wenn du einen ganzen Friedhof voller vergangene Körper vor der Tür hast, die dich an all deine vorherigen Leben erinnern? Wenn die Ewigkeit nie entfernt sein wird'Genau wegen dieser Idee hat die Geschichte etwas sehr philosophisches an sich. Die Menschen wissen ihr Leben nicht mehr so zu schätzen, weil sie jederzeit wiedergeboren werden. Sie haben keine Angst zu sterben, denn ein neuer Morgen wird früher oder später kommen. Nur für eine nicht: Ana.Anas Charakter ist wirklich unscheinbar und wäre sie die einzige gewesen, die diese Geschichte trägt, glaube ich nicht, dass sie mir so gut gefallen hätte. Irgendwie kam es mir so vor, als fehlte Ana etwas, was nichts damit zu tun hatte, dass sie eine No Soul ist. Ihr Charakter war ein wenig farblos und langweilig und erst durch das Zusammentreffen mit Sam hat sie etwas mehr Farbe bekommen. Im Zusammensein mit Sam, lernt Ana neue Dinge kennen, versucht neue Dinge und beginnt sich ernsthaft mit vielen Fragen auseinander zu setzten, was ihrer Persönlichkeit, die bis dahin fehlende Tiefe gegeben hat. Obwohl sie mir zu keinem Zeitpunkt wirklich sympathisch war, mochte ich ihre Art quer zu denken und konnte ihre Handlungen immer nachvollziehen. Was Sam betrifft, den mochte ich sofort. Durch seine vielen Vergangenheiten wirkt er einfach nur interessant und durch seine nicht immer durchsichtigen Handlungen ebenfalls auf eine gute Weise mysteriös.Schön zu lesen war, wie sich die Beziehung der beiden zu einander entwickelt. Es steht zwar für einen als Leser fest: die gehören zusammen, aber der Prozess dahin war langsam und feinfühlig geschrieben und beinhaltete so einige Konflikte und traurige Stellen.Die Welt, die Jodi Meadows uns präsentiert hat mir auch gut gefallen. Ich bin mir nicht ganz sicher, ob man das Buch ins Genre Dystopie einordnen kann, weil es wirklich besser in den Bereich Fantasy passt. Es kommen viele magische Geschöpfe darin vor und mir gefiel, wie die Autorin etwas Altes und etwas Neues miteinander verflochten hat, um so ein interessantes Setting zu schaffen.Ich würde fast schon sagen, das alle Leser, die Ally Condies Buch die Auswahl mochten, auch dieses mögen werden, denn Incarnate wartet weniger mit Spannung in Form von Action auf, sondern besticht eher durch seine ruhigen Klänge, viel Gefühl und eine gute Wendung zum Ende der Geschichte hin. Incarnate erzählt keineswegs eine Liebesgeschichte, sondern eine Geschichte über Selbstfindung, stellt kritische Fragen und lässt zumindest mich nachdenklich zurück.FazitIch würde jetzt zwar nicht laut schreien: endlich etwas Neues! ABER die Idee rund um Incarnate ist einfach klasse, die Charaktere kann man, trotz so manch fehlender Tiefe, dennoch sehr mögen und mir gefiel einfach der ruhige und nachdenkliche Ton, den die Autorin angibt.

Erster Satz: What is a soul, but a consciousness born and born again?Incarnate erscheint im Januar 013 unter dem Titel Meer der Seelen auch auf Deutsch. Allerdings hatte ich zum einen keine Lust wieder ewig zu warten - der zweite Band Asunder erscheint in Englisch schon Ende Januar - und zum anderen ist das Cover der englischen Ausgabe wirklich um einiges hübscher als das der deutschen, was wieder mal nur ein stinknormales Mädchengesicht zeigt. Sieht man sich dann auch noch das Cover des zweiten Bandes an.. nun, die Entscheidung fiel mir sehr leicht ;-) Wer sich dazu entschließt die Reihe ebenfalls auf Englisch zu lesen, dem sei gesagt, das es ziemlich leichtes Englisch ist, mit nur ein paar Wörtern wo man zum Wörterbuch greifen muss. Ich zumindest hatte keinerlei Probleme.Als Ana damals geboren wurde hätte sie eigentlich Ciana sein sollen, die wenig vorher gestorben war. Doch das Baby das Li zur Welt brachte, beherbergte eine Seele die niemand kennt und über die es keine Daten gibt. Eine neue Seele. In den fünf tausend Jahren ihrer Existenz, ist das noch niemals vorgekommen und zu allem übel, ist Ciana auch nach etlichen Jahren nichtmehr wiedergeboren worden. Jeder wird wiedergeboren. Immer und immer wieder, doch diesmal scheint der Kreislauf durchbrochen zu schein und viele der Bewohner von Heart geben Ana die Schuld daran. Selbst ihre eigene Mutter.Ana hat keine einfache Kindheit. Immer wieder wird ihr von ihrer Mutter Li einbläut das sie eine nosoul ist. Jemand der nicht existieren dürfte, jemand der keine eigenen Gefühle hat, jemand dem es nicht erlaubt ist eigene Dinge zu besitzen. Sie wird geschlagen, gedemütigt und immer wieder macht ihr Li mit allen nur erdenklichen Mitteln klar, das sie ein Unfall ist und statt ihr Ciana hätte geboren werden sollen. Ana wächst in dem Glauben auf, das sie Ciana getötet hat, als sie dessen Platz eingenommen hat. Irgendwann beschließt sie das es genug ist und macht sich auf den Weg nach Heart, der großen Stadt in der alle Menschen leben.In der größen Bibliothek möchte sie herausfinden was genau passiert ist. Wieso wurde sie geboren und Ciana verschwand? Auf ihrem Weg nach Heart wird sie von Sylphen angegriffen und springt schließlich von der Klippe in den eiskalten Fluss unter ihr. Erst sieht es so aus als würde sie ertrinken, doch in letzter Sekunde zieht sie ein junger Mann der sich ihr als Sam vorstellt, aus dem Fluss und rettet ihr das Leben. Obwohl Ana sehr skeptisch und ängstlich ist und niemandem traut, vor allem nicht nachdem dieser Jemand weiß wr sie ist, kann Sam sie davon überzeugen ihm zu vertrauen und langsam aber sicher freunden sich die beiden miteinander an. Sie verbringen einige Zeit in Sams nahgelegender Cottage bis Anas Verletzungen einigermaßen geheilt sind und machen sich dann zusammen auf den Weg nach Heart.Ich hatte die Kurzbeschreibung vor dem lesen des Buches nicht noch einmal gelesen, deswegen wusste ich auch nicht was auf mich zu kam. Allerdings war ich mir schon wenige Seiten nach Sams Erscheinen sicher, das die beiden sich ineinander verlieben würden und so war es dann auch. Eine so schöne und süße Liebesgeschichte habe ich schon lange nichtmehr gelesen. Sam gibt sich alle Mühe Ana Sicherheit zu vermitteln und sie bemüht sich nicht immer gleich in Abwehrstellung zu gehen und dabei kommen sich die beiden langsam näher. Obwohl es ziemlich früh zu einer Situation kommt in der Ana Sam in eine Situation bringt in der er handeln könnte oder nicht, dauert es doch sehr lange bis die beiden schließlich wirklich zusammen kommen und mir gefiel das wirklich sehr gut.Plot und Liebesgeschichte sind gut verteilt und so hat man nie das Gefühl das eines von beiden im Vordergrund steht, doch natürlich gibt es in Heart so einige Dinge die es zu erkunden gibt. Ana muss, um in Heart bleiben zu dürfen, einige Dinge lernen und hat dadurch auch die Möglichkeit ihre eigenen Nachforschungen anzustellen. Wirklich etwas zutage bringen diese aber erst gegen Ende des Buches und das von unerwarteter Stelle. Das fand ich sehr gut gemacht, denn dadurch das Ana nur langsam voran kommt, bleibt es spannend und auch realistischer.Auch hat mich das Buch während des lesens teilweise sehr nachdenklich gemacht. Die Charaktere leben tausende von Jahren. Sie sterben und werden in neuen Körper wiedergeboren und das immer wieder. Sie erinnern sich an ihre früheren Leben, daran wie sie gestorben sind und wie andere gestorben sind. Ich stelle mir das sehr traumatisch vor, was Sam im Laufe des Bandes ja auch bestätigt, und ehrlich gesagt, ich würde so nicht leben können. Irgendwann möchte ich meinen Frieden haben und richtig sterben und nicht immer und immer wieder von vorne anfangen zu müssen, mit all den Erinnerungen an meine alten Leben. Ich würde des Lebens wahrscheinlich sehr schnell müde werden.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Fazit-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Mir gefiel Incarnate wirklich unglaublich gut. Am Anfang dachte ich es wäre eine Dystopie, doch dank der Drachen, Zentauren, Sylphen und anderer magischer Wesen, tendiere ich hier eher zu einem Fantasy Roman. Die Liebesgeschichte ist wunderschön, der Plot gut verteilt und spannend und das Ende kann sich absolut sehen lassen. Ich bin gespannt auf den zweiten Band, jetzt wo einige Dinge aufgeklärt wurden und die Dinge sich komplett geändert haben.

I'm not going to deny it; I fell for the cover. Yes, I know. But just look at it. Beautiful doesn't even begin to describe it.It was the cover art that piqued my curiosity. The book description made me curious enough, but the cover got me wondering why one would choose a butterfly mask, accented in pink and violet, all girlish colors dominating, while the inside didn't sound girlish at all. I totally understand now, though: the way the story is told has almost a fairy tale like touch, everything is smooth, round, unscathed, flawless in Meadow's world.So here's my advice: if it looks like something you would like to read, then follow your instincts.The probably most amazing aspect (and there are many of them, trust me) is the world-building, in all its breathtaking details and spell-binding beauty. As the story unfolds the reader gets to know more about 'Incarnate's unique setting, portrayed like a cross between Fantasy and Utopia, since it features both magical creatures like sylphs and dragons and high-tech devices. The idea about the same souls being reincarnated over thousands of years, combined with a cryptic city with strange pulsing at its heart and supernatural creatures lurking to boil the characters alive, is beyond intriguing and Meadow's precise, flowing writing has no problems breathing life into it.I think what really made this book for me was the main protagonist, Ana. You just can't help but to root for her: cynical, smart, funny, and determined to get her answers no matter the cost. She is surrounded by strangers in a world she doesn't seem to belong in, a mistake that wasn't supposed to happen and trying to find her place. That said, she by far wasn't the only fantastic character I can't wait to meet again; Meadows somehow manages to give everyone that certain something that makes them interesting and real. Sam's and Ana's relationship developed only slowly and faltering, not the insta-love you usually get and I also enjoyed how it wasn't rushed but took its time and that Ana actually stands up and makes her own decisions. Their romance is really cute and it is totally clear why those two complement each other the way they do.Where the fifth star has gone: The story itself isn't exactly well-paced and I can't tell whether it's because of the weak climax, or lack thereof, or because the focus is clearly on the romance, even when it shouldn't be. The beginning is probably the most action-packed part of the book, which striked quite incomprehensible and after the first thirty pages, the pacing recedes suddenly. Fact is, throughout the entire book, there's hardly any suspense, or at least for those who aren't either crazy for the world-building or the romance.My second advice: Don't read it if you're not interested in the basic concept and a cute romance. One lone action-scene interrupts the middle part breifly before things settle back into their sluggish rhythm and it is not until the very end that we get any other.In the end, I felt like I've somehow missed half the book, as if it wasn't quite complete, since the romance-aspect was fully developed while everything else was a little neglected at best. I think it's a shame to waste such great ideas and conceppts on an everyday YA-ramnace. This could have taken place in our decade too.Generally, I found that Meadow's phrase was wonderful when it came to descriptions of settings and relationships, yet suspense, drama and action evidently wasn't the author's strong point. She keeps failing to create an accurate atmosphere,a nd the fighting scenes felt forced and unnatural, especially the 'showdown' was quite a disappointment. She doesn't bother answering anything besides a few very basic questions, and these leave room to about a thousand others.All in all, I recommend Incarnate for all fans of Utopia/Fantasy, who can overlook the missing action part and enjoy sweet romances and great heroines. It is an enjoyable read, although most certainly not suited for everyone.Favorite quote:"It's difficult to focus on my studies when my best friend is struggling to get through the hour."He hesitated. "So I'm your best friend now?"My cheeks heated, and I shrugged. "It was between you and Sarit, and you have the piano. She just has honey."

Ana a 18 ans et est seule. Comprenez par là qu'elle est une "nouvelle âme" tandis que tous ses concitoyens se réincarnent depuis 5.000 ans. En naissant, une ancienne âme a disparu et Ana en est tenue pour responsable.Bizarrerie, accident...le fait de ne pas avoir vécu avant, et de ne pas avoir engrangé de connaissances, de ne pas avoir forgé d'amitiés qui traversent le temps fait d'Ana un mouton noir.Mais après 18 ans de solitude et de vie à l'écart des autres, Ana se rend dans la cité et doit se confronter aux réincarnés. Elle qui est si douce déchaîne peur et passions. Ana veut comprendre les raisons de sa naissance et va se trouver malgré tout des alliés, dont Sam, qui a son âge physique mais 5.000 ans d'existence.Le 1er tome présente ce monde sans entrer trop en avant dans la trame de l'histoire. Le rythme est paisible, la relation Ana/Sam très finement dessinée et j'ai beaucoup aimé.Les conséquences des réincarnations (les réincarnés gardant la mémoire de leurs vies passées et ce dès leur plus jeune âge et ils sont en outre identifiés dès leur naissance par "empreinte génétique"), le changement de sexe des réincarnés et tout ce qui va avec sont bien évoquées même si je pose la question de la débilitation génétique, les réincarnés se reproduisant entre eux-mêmes (population d'1 million de personnes mais certains ne sont pas autorisés à procréer) depuis des générations.Autre bémol: le fait que les réincarnés soient tous heureux de cet état de fait sans être confronté à la lassitude de vivre.J'ai terminé le 2e tome (Asunder) que j'ai trouvé un peu fouillis et bancal dans le déroulé de l'histoire et le grand mystère qui entoure la naissance d'Ana mais il m'a tout de même plu et je vais prochainement entamer la conclusion "Infinite".

Nur Ana, sie wurde nicht wiedergeboren. Sie erinnert sich nicht an tausende von Leben vor ihrem jetzigen, nein, sie ist 18 Jahre alt und genauso fühlt sie sich auch. Allerdings wird sie von ihrer Außenwelt ziemlich abgeschottet, sie wird regelrecht verstoßen. Denn sie ist anders, sie ist unheimlich und wegen ihr musste eine andere Seele sterben!Ana hat also das Gefühl, dass sie nichts wert ist, dass sie genauso gut sterben könnte und niemandem würde es auch nur auffallen. Und genau das trifft auch zu. Genau das wurde ihr ein Leben lang eingetrichtert. Also macht sie sich auf den Weg nach Heart, ihrer Geburtsstadt. Als sie dann aber auf dem Weg dorthin Sam kennenlernt, ändert sich ihr Leben schlagartig. Plötzlich ist sie wichtig, plötzlich sorgt sich jemand um sie und plötzlich hat sie einen wahren Freund.Da dauert es auch nicht lange, bis sie sich in Sam verliebt, welcher aber in dieser Hinsicht keinerlei Interesse zu haben scheint….Zu alldem kommt hinzu, dass Ana in Heart von niemandem gemocht wird und dann überstürzen sich die Ereignisse und niemand weiß, wie es dazu kommen konnte…Meine Meinung zum Buch:Jodi Meadows Schreibstil ist flüssig und einfach zu lesen, außerdem sehr ruhig und detailliert.Die Idee an sich hat mich sehr neugierig gemacht, da es so etwas in dem Ausmaß soweit ich weiß noch nicht gegeben hat.Die Charaktere haben es mir wirklich angetan, auch wenn ich zugeben muss, dass mir Sam noch um einiges besser gefallen hat als Ana selbst. Denn Sam’s Charakter war wirklich..unglaublich. Man konnte mit ihm mitfühlen, seine Entscheidungen verfolgen und gleichzeitig wurde man manchmal so von ihm überrumpelt, dass man ihn plötzlich gar nicht mehr einschätzen konnte. Ana hingegen war mir manchmal ZU naiv, ZU kindlich und ZU sehr darauf bedacht alles richtig zu machen und gemocht zu werden. Die sich langsam anbahnende Liebesgeschichte hat mir sehr gut gefallen und beim Lesen habe ich versucht auszublenden, dass der Altersunterschied bei 5000 und 18 Jahren eigentlich schon viel zu gewaltig ist und es somit nicht mehr wirklich authentisch wirkt. Das fiel auch teilweise bei Sam auf, trotz seines hohen Alters verhielt er sich meist wie ein Teenager, dabei war das ja eigentlich nur die äußere Hülle. Mit seiner ganzen Lebenserfahrung hätte er eigentlich nicht immer so impulsiv oder eben ohne nachzudenken handeln dürfen/sollen. Allerdings sind das kleinere Mängel, über die ich bereit bin hinwegzusehen.Das Buch hat mich auf jeden Fall neugierig gemacht und ich kann es nicht erwarten den zweiten Band zur Hand zunehmen, um zu sehen, wie es mit all meinen Lieblingen weitergeht ;)Fazit:Ein empfehlenswertes Buch, das es mir wirklich angetan hat. Der zweite Band wird also so bald wie möglich gelesen werden. ;)

This book needs to be turned into a movie. This series is comparable to the same anxiety and investment that you feel when reading the Hunger Games... but with more of a romantic twist. The idea of reincarnation is so poetically explored, that no matter which religious background you have, you will think of reincarnation in a new way. This is SUCH a gripping book.

I have had this book on my radar for a long time. Many people are very excited for the sequel. After reading this book, I have to agree with them.Incarnate by Jodi Meadows centers on Ana, a NewSoul or NoSoul, depending on who you ask, a girl who is a brand new soul in a population of reincarnated souls... in essence, everyone has lived many, many lives and she has only lived a few years of her one life. She has a mother who hates her, and sets off on her own at age 18 to travel to the city of Heart. Along the way, she meets Sam, and he is the first friendly person she meets. From there, things develop dramatically, and I don't want to give away any of this book's secrets.I am so torn when reviewing this book. From about 10% to 80% it is really one of the best books I've read in a while. The relationship between Sam and Ana is wonderful and magical. It's been a long time since I've been so moved by a romantic relationship in a YA book. Most of the time I'm convinced I'm too old and jaded to enjoy such things anymore. But Meadows has changed my mind. Sam is the first love interest that I seriously have a crush on myself-- he is gentle, intelligent, modest, and incredibly talented (and mature by about 5000 years). For the first time, we have a love interest that is NOT the bad boy of the novel. To not reveal too much-- any of the scenes centered on music and the masquerade were my favorites, and I literally gasped out loud at several of them (in a good way).So you ask, why does this book get four stars. The beginning of the book, the first 10%, is almost not compelling enough to stick around. We get introduced to her hateful mother, with no good characteristics that I see, and watch poor Ana stagger around feeling sorry for herself. Don't be fooled. The story quickly becomes amazing as I stated above. The end of the story has a bit of an issue too-- lots of action occurs, but I feel that some of the storylines are abruptly cut short in ways that are less than satisfying.That said, there is so much to love about this wonderful book, and I feel like Jodi Meadows is only just getting started. I have no doubt that the next installment in this trilogy will only be stronger and better, and I have just become one of the throng waiting eagerly for the next installment.

I picked up this book after finishing Orphan Queen (which was a great read!). I wanted to try out another Meadows book and was attracted by the beautiful cover and unique premise. Incarnate is a very different book than I am used to. The world centers around a city called Heart. Every person in Heart has been reincarnated over and over again until Ana, a newsoul or nosoul, is born. Ana leaves her abusive mother Li, finding her purpose in Heart as well as developing a close relationship with Sam.The idea behind this world is fantastic and mysterious. I love the idea of reincarnation and Meadows definitely introduced some ideas that I will continue to think about after reading this book. She also brings up interesting ideas regarding sexuality. Each of the souls can be born into a male or female body, and we get to explore some of the past lives of these characters. However I feel like this idea as well as the dynamics of this society were not explored enough. For example, someone who you had a relationship with in a past life could be your parent in another life? We also didn’t really explore the idea that these children were born with all of their knowledge of their past lives. Does it ever become too overwhelming with all these memories? While I did not get as many answers as I hoped I would by the end, I am interested enough to continue reading.Ana bothered me in the beginning. To be fair, she was so physically and emotionally abused for her entire life that I was surprised she could function normally at all. I got tired of reading about how she was so overly-defensive all the time. Sometimes I just wanted to shake some sense into her.I also did enjoy the relationship between Sam and Ana. It was a slow build up and very sweet at times.I enjoyed many aspects of this book and some parts had me thinking, but some things just didn’t sit right with me. I didn’t feel as if some of the characters’ reactions matched how the author characterized them. I know it must be incredibly difficult to write 5000 year old wisdom into characters, but it is unfortunate when it falls flat.[...]

I liked:♥ The uniqueness of the story. Prior to Incarnate, I hadn’t read any reincarnation stories.♥ Ana. I thought her being a newsoul in a world of old souls was a lot like a teenager around adults. Adults have that world weary feeling of having done everything before, but to teens, it’s all new. I really felt for her, living in a world where everyone else had known each other for 5,000 years.♥ There’s an intriguing mix of fantasy and modern day elements. For example, the people of Heart have cars, but instead of driving there from the mountains, they walk for a week, with a pack pony. There are dragons and laser pistols. I liked the blending of old and new.♥ I don’t want to let this book go back to the library. I almost never buy hardcovers, because I don’t have the room for them, but I want to so I can have Incarnate on my shelf. I know I’m going to want to reread it when Asunder comes out in January of 2013. Which is too long to wait, by the way.I didn’t like:— The romance. It came too soon for me, but Sam is a sweet guy. I can see why Ana fell for him. Hower, the romance wasn’t enough to detract from what I loved about the book.— The Tower confused me. I didn’t quite understand the scene with Meuric there, but I’m assuming more explanation for that will come in Asunder.Favorite thing:Everything about this book is beautiful. It’s a very well designed package, from the story to the writing to the cover to the chapter illustrations. There is a striking butterfly drawing at the start of each chapter. I really like the author’s writing style — the descriptions are lush without being purple prose. If I started quoting favorite lines, I’d have ten pages before I knew it. The writing is my absolute favorite part. I hope I can emulate some of Jodi’s style in my own writing.Second favorite thing:Okay, I loved the cover. I’ll admit it. I choose books with my eyes first, zooming in on covers that I really like. It’s so unusual, and even better — it fits the story. I’ve said it over and over, but I could stare at this cover forever.

I love love love the cover! The colors, the movement, and the feel of it had me dying to delve in the depths of the pages so that I may figure out what the cover represents. This is a new book and feel about things that we read alot about like dragons, souls, reincarnation and etc.. The author has done an amazing job with the unique world that she has created. I'm tickled pink to say that I stayed up all night read this book because I couldn't put it down and didn't want to stop. I wanted to figure out who was after Ana and Sam and also who was following them. I simply can't wait to read the next book in this series and I hope that it is better than the first, because I'm reeling about the ending....Okay if you haven't figured it out yet I LOVE LOVE LOVE this read! The author has done a great job on the characters with the descriptions, personalities, and love the dialogue. The unique world was so wonderful that I could just imagine myself right there with Ana while she struggles to become something better than a no soul. The romance of Ana and Same even made it the story even better with the tension filled talks between them and the hormonal issues that every young adult faces. This book makes me wish I could play an instrument. The way Jodi writes about music is just beautiful.I really love the world. I can't really picture it though. The fantastical element of having mythical creatures and a city and woods and almost a whole uncharted world really pushes my into an RPG styled world, but it's dystopian? I'm just going to think of Final Fantasy and stick with that :PAna starts off as super overprotective of herself- with good reason. Having a crappy mum and growing up in exile has made her construct a pretty high wall.But then Sam comes along. Sweet, Sam who brings her to Heart- The major city everyone lives in. He's really such a great character, such a drastic difference compared to most of the bad assery boys we typically see in YA novels.My first thought going into reading this was "We better find out some sort of answer to why she's new and stuff."And I wasn't let down. It wasn't ALL the answers, But it answered the major question of why and how she came to be.

In a society where everyone has been living reincarnated lives for 5,000 years, 18 year old Ana is an aberration-a new soul, one that has never lived before. Unfortunately, she was expected to be a reincarnation of someone else and is blamed by some, including her mother, for the loss of that person. This fantasy combines mythical creatures like dragons and a god who seems mostly absent from Ana's homeland of Range, yet looms over her as she searches for answers as to why she is the only newsoul with the help of Sam, a musician who agrees to be her guardian and sends Ana conflicting signals about her growing attraction toward him.The portrayal of Ana's frustration at being the only one who hasn't been around thousands of years seems very realistic and it is easy to sympathize with Ana when she feels left out and unlovable. There are definitely more questions raised about how the city of Heart came to be founded and what kind of power the god that watches has. I'm definitely interested to see what Ana and Sam do next.

The butterfly mask is a beautiful symbol for incarnation. Already pre-ordered my copy because I simply HAVE to have this beautiful book on my bookcase!Um, ok. Now I can talk about the book. Ana lives in Range, where a million souls are reincarnated over and over. When Ana was born, another soul disappeared and no one knows why Ana is a NewSoul. Feared and disgraced Ana is taken away by her evil mother Li to be raised outside of society. Li tells Ana lies about the outside world and is very cruel to her. On Ana's 18th birthday, she takes off to the city of Heart to find out once and for all why she is new and whether or not she will re-incarnate when she dies. Along the way crosses paths with Sam, a teenage boy who saves her life on more than one occasion. He gives Ana a chance and agrees to take her to Heart and help her find the answers she is looking for.Sam defends Ana against the counsel and the town people who don't want Ana to live with them. Sam agrees to let Ana live with him and teach her skills necessary to survive in the city. Although at first Ana is distant and defensive against Sam, the more time they spend together she starts to warm up to him and their friendships grows...slowly but surely. But soon, someone is after Ana and she must find out who and why before they kill her, because she might not be able to come back.Incarnate was beautifully written and Ana was so easy to relate to. Although I was a little weirded out by the concept of Incarnation, especially the fact that sometimes people were re-incarnated as a different gender, the story was very original and fresh and the action was fast paced enough to keep you hooked throughout the whole story. Most of the focus of the story was on the friendship between Ana and Sam. It was nice to read a YA story where the main couple didn't instantly fall for each other.Incarnate had it all: great story, romance, action, a masquerade ball, and dragons!
