A simply great band!
In May 2003 I was attending JazzFest in New Orleans when I was taken one night/morning to the Maple Leaf, a great venue for raw live music in the Garden District area. Mofro was playing sometime around midnight or 1am. I had never heard of them so I spent about an hour before the show on the back patio sipping frothy beverages and hanging with about 10 friends. I could hardly hear them once the show started and after about 30 minutes I told a friend to hold on while I went inside to hear a bit of the music..."I'll be right back" I said. Well, I never came back. There was something so fresh, yet old about the music. Nothing like it out today that I could place, yet felt like I was listening to a band with 30+ years under their belt. Tight, spontaneous, not afraid to take some liberties when live. By 3:30 or 4am when they finished we were all so fired up and buzzed by the music (if you know what I mean) that we stayed for the 5am band. The following night I went to see Mofro again, this time at the Parish, upstairs at the House of Blues in the Quarter. I don't think that they were as comfortable playing in the Parish as with the Maple Leaf, but they still put on a great show. I have now bought about 10 CD's for people and every single one of them has been instantly hooked. Looking forward to seeing them tomorrow at the Madison Blues Fest in Wisconsin and then next Tuesday in Chicago at Schuba's. If this band is playing anywhere remotely close to home....GO!!! You will not be disappointed. Outstanding songs include Blackwater, Florida, Lazy Fo Acre, and Brighter Days.<...

Great Debut By A Unique Talent!
JJ Grey and Mofro is the best new band to come around in quite some time. Their debut album is just stunning. It just drips with soul and sincerity. It's not rock or blues or country. It's serious Florida swamp boogie funk soul music. JJ paints a vivid picture of his home, and entices you with the scent and flavor of the South. The music is beautiful and urgent at the same time. It moves you, and makes you want to move. This disc shows off their substantial range, yet defines exactly what they are all about. JJ is talented at a variety of instruments, and has surrounded himself with a band that flavors his music perfectly. His vocal delivery is warm, honest, and gritty. They've recently released their 5th disc (Georgia Warhorse), and there isn't a bad one in the bunch. You can't go wrong with any Mofro CD. This is as good as any a place to start. You won't be disappointed, no matter what kind of music you like. Don't try to define them - just listen to them, and enjoy!

Love em
I can say that JJ Grey and Mofro are one of my new favorites. Steeped in soul, rock and the culture of Northern Florida. This is not for everyone I am sure, probably never will become commercial success. But I love em and I am collecting more of their stuff

Okay
A little different than I am used to, but it's always good to spread your wings and find new kinds of music.
