It's plastic - how long will it be accurate?
I like this item because it helps identify both Inch and Metric screws with one screw checker. The metal ones I have are either/or - Inch/metric. It is unlikely that the threads will wear out on the metal guides but I'm not convinced the plastic one will be as sturdy. I like that both types are on one tool. I'm sure it will work well with new screws - not sure how it will work with worn or rusty screws. I also like that it gives you an idea about which drill bit to use to drill a hole for the screw. I have a couple of other plastic guides which are more robust but I think this one will work OK if I take my time and be careful with it. For $10 it does the same thing the $50 units do.

I was skeptical BUT not a surprised with overall quality & precision @ low $$$
I bought this for a project that has many small metric screws (old Otari R2R tape deck) many have been replaced with wrong size (SAE where Metric was needed!!)-so this was a Amazon high rated product that was EXTREMELY inexpensive as compared to the more professional stainless steel and/or heavy duty models - some of which cost 5 to 8 times the cost of this. When I saw the plastic in package I thought - "will be returning this". But after using it on several differnt size screws - some very close in size to each-other and one that wouldn't screw in I said ah ha threads aren't cut correctly - when in fact - I discovered previous owner stuck a #6 SAE screw where a M3 should been & this gauge WORKED to discover the problem. NOW THE CONCERNS - although I found of the screws I tested the tapped holes were surprisingly very accurate,, the lettering on my off-white color gauge is very well done and crisp, logically laid out on both sides containing different information for each hole cut - DURABILITY is the obvious concern - I can see trying to force a badly cut or damaged thread screw into this plastic device and ruining the inside threads for that hole, but, I was impressed by the depth of the cut threads - they are cut very well and deep into this plastic. Time will tell if this holds up, lettering stays visible & crisp and with care, the threaded holes (BTW - folks have trouble answering simple question - how thick is this gauge - it is 4.73mm or 3/16" thick (thicker than I thought it would be), it is rather stiff for plastic, glossy finish. I can't see this holding up in a machine shop environment but it also doesn't cost 70 bucks - fine for home/hobby or even small business work so long as you remember it's plastic so no harsh chemicals or extreme environmental conditions, must be stored in a protective case or away from anything that can scratch or damage finish and screws tested must have cleaned threads and not badly chewed up / damage threads and certainly not bent - those conditions will definitely ruin this gauge although those conditions can also damage metal gauges as well. I recommend lubricating screw threads lightly with non-reactive oil/grease (teflan) after cleaning out all grit and grime. I hoping to get a few years out of this - maybe even more... we will see but for $9 bucks - that's a bargain!! Chris

It may be plastic, but it has good threads and accurate screw sizes, it is sturdy and easy to read. Definitely worth the price.

Plastic not the best material for a thread gauge
The good is that it does what it advertises and met my needs. Since I don't need to use it very often, durability isn't as much of a concern. However, because it is constructed of plastic, it would be very easy to cross thread, so you have to be very careful when using. Would definitely not recommend it if you need to use it often. For occasional use it is probably ok, though I will probably buy a metal one when this one wears out.
