Discovering Statistics

This textbook is designed to be used in conjunction with a college course. My college years are long past, but I want to learn statistics. I saw a recommendation of this book by a retired professor of statistics in a statistics journal so I just picked it up to teach myself. It is excellent. It is a clearly written, thorough introduction to basic statistics. As an added bonus it comes with practice and testing software on the principles discussed in the text. The text also includes examples of how to work the problems using Minitab and the TI-83 calculator (and occasionally Excel). You do not need to use any of those programs for your study. I am using the Casio fx-9750GA Plus calculator (which I love!) and the statistical program R (which I love even more!!) to do my calculations. If you are interested in learning basic statistics, I highly recommend this book.

This book coupled with the learning modules from the CD really work to deliver the concepts. This book was used in conjunction with an online/distance learning class and having the supplemental material CD really helped in offering detailed walkthroughs where there is not a professor physically there to guide you on a white board.Discussing the physical book itself; like another reviewer I purchased the book used and only had the demo code. This company makes it easy to get the CD access code for a good deal.

Book didn't come with CD-RON, which is very IMPORTANT with EACH BOOK. You need formulas that you can add numbers to solve a problems. OTHERWISE BOOK IS EXCELLENT.

I was assigned this textbook for my statistics course. I bought a copy on amazon marketplace used, which was great. I took the extra effort to make sure I got one that said it came with the CD. The CD turned out to only have the demo license. The problem is the software needs a unique product key which can only be used by one student, so if you get a used copy with the CD, you'll still need to buy a license from Hawkes Learning.Hawkes Learning will send you a copy of the CD if you ask, so ultimately if you are buying this book used, don't worry about whether the CD is included, you will have to buy a license anyway and when you do you can request a CD to go with it.

I buy all my books online and this seller is the best. It was being sold at a very good price and the condtion was at very little use but still looked brand new the book also came with a cd for Ebooks. I am more than satisfied with my purchase.

Bought is as it was listed as a requirement for my Intro to Statistics class at college. First week in class, instructor announced he will not be using it. I thought I would use it to study and help with the class anyway. It's written so it confused me more. I use it for paperweight now and I'm sure a bonfire next spring.

I personally hate math but this book breaks it down into the simplest form and gives allot of examples. The book is written in such a great format that my 12 yr son can understand it.

It helped alot especially the program that is offered with the book. When ever I needed to practice what I learned in class, turning to the Hawks learning program really helped me. Unfortunately, once you purchase the program, you really don't need the book because the program is helpful enough and has all the book along with it. If you really need this for your class, I would get it, but try and see if just the Hawks learning program will be enough to get by in your class before buying both.
