How comfortable is the handle on these canes? I don't see that they are padded in any way.

There is no padding; I never seen pads on any walking cane. I purchased for the future so I am not really useing it yet. But it is very pretty and the handle is very soft and comfortable to the touch.

does it come with a travel bag?

How wide is the shaft? I will probably need to replace the food with a stabilizer but I want to make sure it would fit

First, we love the cane. I believe the shaft is the "standard size". If you want to make sure, take the cane into any Walgreens or CVS or whatever chain drug store is near you and measure it. Then you can shop it online with confidence. Also, if you search on Switch Sticks canes, they sell them with the stabilizer already attached or can be purchased separately.
