This novel was a fascinating story about the 30 year Japanese occupation of Korea. It helped me to understand the still lingering animosity between the two cultures, as a few of the elders that witnessed it may still be alive, and have told their stories. The author was able to interview some of them. It is a fictional tale about a Korean family's struggle to survive, the assimilations and atrocities that took place. I highly recommend this enjoyable read.

got this for my mom as she's an avid reader. she says it's beautifully translated and read both volumes within a week as she couldn't stop herself.

Although this is a fiction, it accurately portrays how Japanese treat Koreans. Very good and in-depth.

Great in understanding the historic background of korea/japan. Dark novel but was easy read in general
