In 1999 Polyvinyl, then only 3 years old, released an unassuming debut album by a band called American Football. The band played a dozen shows and then parted ways. Then something remarkable happened: for the next 15 years, the album was discovered over and over, going on to sell more than 100,000 copies and becoming one of the most influential indie/emo albums of all-time. In 2014 and 2015 American Football played their first shows in 15 years, selling out venues the world over. Organically, the band started to write new material, and years of ideas gelled into the a picture-perfect second album--to be released this October--17 years after the first.

Good not great
If you're a fan of the original American Football record, you're likely to find lots to like about their new album. The songs follow slippery, twisting paths, the guitars still entwine and Mike K's lyrics still read like he's a world-weary teenager. It's just... the magic's not quite there. Their debut, 17 years ago, captured something unique; a twilight sound, evocative, kind of bleak, but it jangled and cheered as it puzzled things out. This time around Mike K's vocals are high in the mix. The songs have choruses. There's a polish and sheen to the production that's smoothed out the original's hazey, ragged edges. These are not necessarily bad things, but they make for a different listen.

A Great Follow-Up Album
I loved American Football when I first heard them, to find out they reunited and then to hear their newer material just validates them as a vastly superior group. This album is much the same as the first, but with American Football, that's all I need. In this day-and-age, their sound seems more valuable than ever.

I bought this album just because I liked the name of the band
I bought this album just because I liked the name of the band. I was pleasantly surprised by it. A nice laid back album to listen to. Good song writing and some music to go with it. If you aren't sure about this I'd give them a go as you'll be pleased you did.
