Very good for test preparation.
You need to complete a study guide book BEFORE you attempt the practice exams in this one. I recommend traditional hardcopy rather than Kindle or pdf. You should read this away from your computer, your browser, your IM, text messages, email and Facebook. Only go to the computer when you need to 'google' some supplementary articles or documentation. The questions in the practice exams are more difficult and have many more 'gochas' than those of the real exam. In the end I took each question one at a time, answered it to the best of my ability in 3 minutes (oh, by the way, you only get 2.5 minutes per question in the actual test--2.5 hours total) then reviewed the topic in the study guide or other material if I got it wrong or detected a weakness. I highlighted the explanations heavily and drew up a bulletted list of Top 10 Gotchas to look out for, which quickly grew to 30. Lather, rinse, repeat.I was barely scoring 50% on the 3rd practice exam but scored 81% on the actual test. I had not taken the 4th exam because I wanted to keep it in reserve as something new to go over in case I failed my first attempt. As it turned out, I passed handily.

Great book but the exam sucks!
Hello, I'm studying for java exam andm I highly recommend this book.If you have reasonable experience programming Java 5 or 6 then you'll be able to follow all the topics. I found the material pretty heavy so 15 minutes study every night worked best for me. My only complaint is that the exam is so bloody hard! However Java programmers aren't paid the big bucks without reason - and this exam certainly sorts the men from the boys. The material seems to cover all of the exam objectives and the pre-requisite stuff falls earlier in the book. Some of the chapters are quite long (I'm looking at you, Generics!!!). I found the authors' style very engaging and a small amount of humor in relevant places relieved the boredom of study. You'll also find numerous sections labelled "Exam Watch" spliced in between the material throughout the chapters and these are invaluable to answering the "gotcha" exam questions correctly. At the end of each chapter there are some 'test yourself' questions and even though I'm a seasoned java programmer I still found them hard... but that's why I bought a book and I'm really happy with this one. Recommended. Two thumbs up.

Ridiculously difficult compared to actual exam
I studied for the SCJP (OCJP) test for more than a year (on and off). I started with theΒ SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Exam 310-065 Β book, which was helpful. Once I finished, I felt that I needed more exam questions before taking the real exam, so I purchased this exams book. My exam scores (for the exams in this book) tracked at around 20-40% correct. Toward the end, I think I scored about 50%. According to this book, with such scores, I wasn't close to being ready to take the real exam. For this reason, I rescheduled the exam several times and I continued to study. The book told me I wasn't ready, right?I finally got the courage to take the real exam. (My test voucher was about to expire, so I didn't have much choice.) The actual exam is *worlds* easier than the exams in this book. I scored an 83% on the real exam, but according to this book, I wasn't close to being ready to take it. I finished the exam with 45 minutes to spare, after several rounds of review. As another reviewer stated, there are fewer options for each question and the number of correct answers for each question is stated in the real exam. This makes the questions much easier! On top of that, the questions were more obvious. (Sure, there were tricky things thrown in (e.g., final and static modifiers) here and there.) To be fair, the book states that the questions are more difficult than those on the actual exam. So, yes, the exams book did inform me of some exam 'gotchas'. It also scared me so much that I almost didn't take the exam. I would have preferred a book that was representative of the actual exam.

Perfect study companion
There is no doubt that studying for the OCJP is a difficult task for most of us. The authors of this exam prep companion say it upfront, you must study, take practice exams, and write plenty of code in order to be prepared for the exam. The OCJP practice exam guide is a perfect study companion; there are many questions that specifically target the types of topics you will find on the exam. The answers will provide the information you need to learn from your mistakes and become better prepared for the real exam.I highly recommend this guide.

Great tough practice.
Great for the OCJP 6 exam... still available in 2016 and effectively covers all the Java Android currently uses.As many have said the biggest 'problem' with these exam questions are they are much harder than the real exam.My strategy to pass is to actually take these tests as simply exercises and do each question one by one without time limit - if I get them wrong then I study the area more in depth to I understand the subject better allowing me to fill in gaps in my knowledge. Itmay take me 20 minutes to do a question or even longer.By doing this I gain a thorough knowledge of Java by shoring up all the edge cases this book loves to throw at you (most I have never seen in production code).

Great study guide - harder than the exam
As the authors state, the exams in this book are harder than the real exam - I was getting only about 50% of them right, but yesterday passed the real exam with 93% :) If you work through this book and take the time to understand all of the questions - type the code examples, run them, mess around with them, study their behaviour with a debugger - then you'll learn a lot about the language and be in really good stead of the exam. It also helps if you have the authors' study guide too.

Well, it not even closes to the real exam
The exercise in this book (well, there is only exercise) way way way harder and trickier than the real exam. I scored 58% average in those mock tests but 83% in the real one. It did help me understand much deeper on Core Java and the explanation for each question is clear as well. But don't reply on this book, it wouldn't help you pass the exam if you don't have a study guide in hand.

Did not relate to the exam
The exam questions in this book are "tricksy". Every one seems to have a hidden trap. The real exam was much more straightforward.I got 30% of the questions right in the book but passed the real exam 75%.

Great book for it's purpose
I am prepping for my Java certification and this books is really what you need!It goes through a variety exams kind of questions BUT the actual questions on this book are harder than the one on the exam (I lent it to a friend of mine, and he was very happy about it)
