I wanted to use this as a spacer of sorts. how much compression does it have?

It will compress to about half it's thickness but not eaisly. It's pretty dense stuff.

How can I smooth an edge I cut to fit on this? The cut edge is not as smooth as the originl sides.

I would try a Dremel or a small sander
