The Mensa Genius Quiz-a-day Book

Recommend Even if not a Genius.
Bought as a gift for my brother who is a Mensa member. Of course, took a peek prior to sending off to him for Christmas. The quizzes had a great variety and were fun even for me - who will never be a Mensa Member. Would recommend for anyone who likes to figure out word quizzes.

Funny!
Got this book for one of my grandpa’s stocking stuffers at Christmas (sorry for late review). He is a member of Mensa and is the smartest man I know! He was stumped on a few of these, great questions!!

Smart Remarks:
I bought this book prior to my taking the aptitude test that got me into Mensa. It was both fun and helpful and I at least felt a little smarter coming out the other end. I would recommend this book to anyone contemplating taking any similar test or just for a fun and challenging read. I sent this and a couple of other Mensa books to my niece and nephew. It went over pretty good with everyone in the family.

fun but a bit old-fashioned
I did these puzzles as if it was a daily devotional, 1 puzzle a day. I was able to get 2/3 of the problems correct with a 15 minute time limit, strict grading. These puzzles are all over the map in terms of difficulty. Most are a bit too easy, some are brutally hard. This book was published in the 80's, and Ms. Salny was in her 60's at the time this was published. So a lot of the puzzles have an "old" feel to them. I was much better at the math puzzles (a lot were solving 2 variables in 2 equations). My nemesis was the anagrams, some of which were brutal for me. Overall a lot of fun. In some cases the puzzles had multiple correct answers, and the answer given in the back was sort of arbitrary.

Pretty fun
Fun book, hard to believe so many mensans gets such easy maths riddles wrong, and so many get so many English-language riddles right when I get them wrong. I’m only halfway through not even, and I’ve found a few mistakes in there, here’s what I’ve got so far: Points for Mensa bookDid the mensans have a time limit by which they were to complete the questions? Also, it is apparent they had paper to work with, and I assume a pen, as this is disclosed in one of the answers (“perhaps some of the Mensans used paper cut-outs” or something similar to this effect was said in one of the answers).April 12 question is not hard at all it is just time consuming, and much quicker with a pen and paper.Feb 8: Brazil is not east of New York, it is sse… it is also west… the world is not flat. You cannot simply travel east from NY and arrive in Brazil.Feb 9: O can also be 0, you didn’t state that we can’t use the number 0, yet your answer seems to imply there’s only one way… also your answer invokes the addition of another number into the equation which isn’t assigned a letter so I’d say 0 is a cleaner answer for Feb 9.Feb 12: there are many different ways i can end up with the same amount of 5’s, 25’s, and 50 cent coins from 16$ raided out of pig-bank… you haven’t stated that these were the only coins i retrieved u just said that I had equal amount of 50c 5c and 25c coins whilst having $16 (and that I was surprised).March 14: homonyms arent always spelled differently, and they don’t always sound sound, but they do have to at least be the same in one of these ways; the question gives the false lesson/teaching/impression that homonyms have to both sound the same and be spelled differently. The answer is not exactly an opposite: “raise your hand if you want to go to a toilet; raze your risen hand if you’re female.” Or “raise that forklift load to 2 metres, and then raze that rise down to a 1m raise.” The direct opposite to raise is lower: if a location point is mentioned, you can either raise it or lower it in regards to its centre of gravity.March 17: u speak of rows and lines as if there might be a difference, why not just stick with one or make it clear you mean a line is a row? Or are you mistakenly saying—without saying—that a line is only horizontal?April 3:Dog, cat, cow and panda are all there too, and I assume more.April 7This question simply doesn’t make sense. If the border is two tiles wide, and goes around the whole room, this means it would require less tiles than if the border was 6 tiles wide and yet you claim in the riddle that the same amount of tiles is used.April 28:You say the ‘top and bottom and both sides’ add up to 9, and then u explain how the robber robbed her and took 4 diamonds and left it so that there’s still 9 on each side.. so you kind of lead us to think that your talking about the two sides as in not the top and bottom as u specified earlier: a correct answer could technically be 333 on the sides and 313 on the top and bottom…May 13I googled how many ‘winds’ there are, and the top answer was 5. You claim there are in fact 4 ‘winds’ in existence. 👏May 16They’re all verbs except for carte. What’s worth more brownie points? The thing that sticks out first, is that one of these words is not an action. 👏May 28I was worried you would say the answer is ‘yourself’ and that’s what you e said. If there is a relationship alleged, one would postulate that there is a half-sibling involved for oneself to relate-to… relating requires another entity to relate to… in this case, a half-sister: she’s the only one married of the fathers daughters, to a man, and she’s the only daughter of the fathers new/old wife. This is quite a fail.June 8It looks well and truly like a 0 and not an O… 031 but in the answer you claim you write O31. Fail.June 13It seemed to me apparent that this was not a one-sided design. I assumed it was unfolded two potential ways, and could be refilled thus… thus I assumed after finding that A and D definitely work, and C definitely doesn’t, that B must be impossible too (given what you stated was factual). I would say the question was wrong, there is only one that can’t be made out of this structure. You didn’t say the other sides of the squares were blank.

Way to easy
The challenges are short and well written, but way too easy, even though the book compares them with Mensa results.

it is well designed and a great book to have nearby
The book IMO is not very challenging as most of the questions have an 85% correct answer rate (meaning 85% who read the question get it right). However, it is well designed and a great book to have nearby, especially in the bathroom.
