Much like the Golden Compass
The Obsidian Mirror is a delightful read as a puzzle book. There is a bit to like about the male protagonist, however, he wasn't highly relatable for me. His father has gone missing, the boy presumes he's been murdered by a man his father knew. He is obsessive in his quest to prove the man murdered his father and basically prejudges every thing and everyone in the process to prove it.That may be particularly teen-like behavior but I wanted to like him more. The other characters are also self absorbed in their own quests and will stop at nothing to get what they desire. the one exception to this general characterization is in the person of Wharton who is a very likable character, cares what happens to others in the story and has a sense of morals that govern his behavior. That said the story is engaging, the plot arc inventive, and the attention to detail quite amazing. Ms. Fisher does leave you wanting more. I like the change that the reader sees in the character of Oberon as well as the change the protagonist makes in his understanding of Oberon. Her world building is rich and the relationship/feelings the son feels for the missing father is highly believable.

Rating NOT based on Content
Rating is NOT based on content of the book!If you're looking for the cover shown, be aware the ISBN is the SAME for the older version of the cover (generally cover edition ISBNs differ) and whether you get the cover shown or the old cover depends on what's easiest for the order filler to grab. To my knowledge, there is no way to distinguish that you want the cover shown over the older cover. That being said, shipping was fast and the return was very easy.

Not just for kids
I'm an adult who couldn't put this time-travel book down. The pacing and characterization are great. I'm going to read more by Fisher.

A wonderful read
Excellent suspenseful plot. Sets the stage for upcoming books. The characters could literally walk out of the pages of the book or the screen of your kindle. Thought provoking in a quiet way. Well worth reading.

Kept me engaged ... TOTALLY
Straight off I have to say The Obsidian Mirror is AMAZING! I was so caught up in the story that my notes are minimal! Why haven't I heard of this author before? The blurb is a good representation of the story.Beginning with a scene of an angry student at Compton College in Switzerland, we follow Jake and his Humanities teacher, Wharton as they travel to Wintercombe Abbey in the search for his father.Next we're introduced to Sarah. I had so many questions about her and the replicants. What is it? Who is it? Why is Sarah important? What impact will she have? Is she from the past? From the future? How does she know Wintercombe Abbey which has been in Venn's family for generations? The scenes in London felt so real! I was with Jake as he climbed that rope and locked in the musty cellar. The author captures the `Shee' (Sidhe) perfectly. Everything I've ever read about the mythology came to life on these pages. With a great cast of characters (most of whom are not what they seem) and fast-paced action at every turn, The Obsidian Mirror is a story that will totally engage your imagination. There is not one place where I could put it down because I just HAD to keep reading. The threads started to come together and I got some answers. I can't wait to see what happens in The Box of Red Brocade ...Whether you're a YA reader or an adult! if you love fantasy, folklore/mythology, dystopian/sci-fi then I highly recommend you read this. The Obsidian Mirror is awesome. Did I say I loved this?!?!?!I bought The Obisidian Mirror a long time ago, and so glad I found it recently while browsing on my Kindle!

Excellent series opener
The Obsidian Mirror drew me in, entangled me within its web, and left me wanting more, much more - which is good, as it's part of a series! The storytelling is imaginative and pacy. There is some truly beautiful imagery, in particular the atmosphere conjured by the whirling snow and the old Abbey, and the stars described as "a dusting of diamonds". There are quite a few phrases in this that I wish I'd crafted myself! The Shee are chillingly wonderful, and I love the way some of the characters are able to slip between world-seasons, and how the author has described the edges of those worlds as they meet (another "oh, I wish I'd written that!" moment!) Her style fits my reading (and writing) preferences beautifully. All of the characters are memorable in their own way, but Piers is the one who intrigues me the most!A solid-as-a-rock 4 stars (very nearly a 5), and there's no question: I shall be buying the sequel.

A very enjoyable read
Too many books these days seem to be unfinished, as if having a series of books means that no individual one can hold a complete story. Refreshingly, this book does not fall into that category. It manages to tell a complete story, whilst still leaving just enough dangling threads to make the second in the series feel like a must have. That fact alone, in this day and age, is enough for me to give a high star rating to the book. It would be selling it short, however, to suggest that is the only reason I give it 5 stars. The Obsidian Mirror very quickly drew me in. It moves at quite a pace, which fits the story very well. Events are happening in a short space of time (even as they happen in different times), and I really liked that the pacing of the story reflected this. I felt, as the reader, I was learning about the characters in parallel to them learning about each other. Their questions were my questions, and each answer propelled me along with them. Many other reviewers have included a synopsis, so I won't repeat that information here. Suffice to say I found the setting, so evocatively described, to be enchanting and intriguing. The story felt original, whilst drawing upon familiar ideas. The characters were engaging. The end was satisfying. And I can't wait to start on the second book!

Clever time travel
This novel is directed at young adults, so not aimed at me, but I like fantasy stories. It was compelling to read, but I have to admit to being quite disappointed with the ending. By this I mean it shouldn't have ended when and where it did, so more needed please!
