Can't find the words
I bought this CD without ever having heard a track or anything about it. I only bought it because it kept coming up on my recommendation list from Amazon. I buy a lot of cd's and it is not unusual for me to give them a quick listen and then despite my best intentions, never listen to them again. I popped this into my computer early on a Saturday morning when I was alone, put on the headphones, and started to visit some web sites. Almost immediately I stopped thinking about anything but the music. This guy was reaching into my soul. All that I wanted to do was listen intently. This is going to sound like an odd comparison, but the last time I felt this way about an album was the first time I heard "Dark Side of the Moon". On the very first listen everything seemed to fit perfectly together. The songs connect to each other in such a unique and subtle fashion.Since that first listen I have put this CD in my car and have listened to it on my commute to and from work every day. I find myself driving slower or taking the long way so I can hear all of the songs. When I wake up in the morning I start thinking about when my first chance will be to listen to it.This CD is certainly not for everybody. Those of you that like artists like Ryan Adams, Leonard Cohen, Rufus Wainwright or some of the others mentioned in other reviews will not be dissapointed.

Beautifully desperate
Damien Rice's debut cd is incredible. It has so much of what I love in other albumns and yet is still very unique. His songwritting and storytelling are supurb. His songs transpose emotion into a sonic experience that pulls you in. You find yourself both sympathizing and empathizing with the feelings and experiences of Rice and the personas he creates. It is definitely not a "feel good" albumn, but the feeling are as honest as they are srtong. The songs are built with Rice's voice and acoustic guitar as the centerpiece, but there is also cello, clarinet, bass, drums, percussion, and beautiful harmonies. The arrangments have elements, of jazz, classical, folk, and rock, but trully defy a simple catagorization. I suggest you just light some candles, pour a glass of red wine and find out for yourself.

Hauntingly Good Music
Have you seen the movie Closer yet, if not watch the movies and listen to the song being played throughout the movie. Then do what I did, find out who sang this hauntingly beautiful song, and buy the CD. The Blowers Daughter, is one of the best songs that I have heard in a long time. The song sticks to your mind, body and spirit, if this song does not get to you, there is something wrong with you. Then after yoy have played that song, sit back and listen to the others songs that will grow on you too. I agree with some of the other who have reviewed this CD, you will not be diappointed, this is one not just a good CD,it's a great one.

Aching, slow, soft, addictive...
Weighed down and looking for music as a soundtrack, I found a recommendation for Damien Rice's "Cannonball."The plaintive guitar couples with his achy strained voice creating a song that is bittersweet and emotionally raw. The lyrics are beautiful and insightful, with a tender sensuality -- "there's still a little bit of your taste in my mouth..."I listened to it over and over, until finally experiencing the rest of the album. The song "Volcano" combines Mr. Rice with a lovely female vocalist, Lisa Hannigan, and a darkly emotional string arrangement with obsessive lyrics "what I am to you is not real." "Delicate" begins with a simple beat and gently sweeping strings, as the singer asks his love why she stayed with him if he means nothing to her, and builds to a heartbreaking overwrought pleading. You can clearly picture him, drunk, standing in the rain outside her door, begging for answers. The album leaves you feeling slightly chilled and empty, and I mean that in the best possible way. Damien Rice has beautifully melded indie folk rock with his Irish heritage, the paradox of deep emotions and restraint.

Over and Over and Over and Over
I remember first hearing this cd in college! I can't believe time has past by soo quickly, but his music remains true and universal! I love Damien Rice! This cd is good for nonstop listening pleasures, especially to set the love and/or emo mood. I listen to this over and over again, and I am always content!I think Damien Rice is one of the best singer/songwriters of our time. I would compare him equally with Ray Lamontagne.

Heaven sounds like this
When's the last time you put a new CD on and felt like the speakers were grabbing hold of your ears and commanding you to listen? If you want to enrich your life, buy this CD. Read on if you must, but that's all you need to know. I picked up O after reading a magazine article on "the best CDs of 2003 you never heard". Recommendations like that usually end up disappointing me. Not this time.In critiquing music we inevitably try to draw a frame of reference that the reader will relate to. Can't do that here because O is unlike anything you've heard. It's acoustic not electric, that's the best I can do without pigeonholing it. This music is just achingly beautiful. The use of cello, the female backing vocal, the opera singer on "Eskimo", it all works perfectly. The arrangemnet and the recording are so up front and personal, it feels like you're attending a private concert in your house.I'm at a loss to describe how beautiful this music is. What an absolute breath of fresh air this is in the new millenium.

Unforgettable Album and come w/ AutoRip!
One of the most amazing sounding albums, every song is strong and you can feel the emotion involved. I love that it came with AutoRip so that I can listen to it anywhere!

Finally on vinyl
'O' is a a real modern classic and a must have for any acoustic and singer songwriter fan out there. Now available in the must have format since the vinyl revival. This version comes over two 180 heavy pressed vinyl with side D all additional bonus material not included on the original CD release. Although, most Damien Rice fans will be familiar with the additional tracks. The gatefold cover includes lyrics to all the original tracks from the album and the sleeves are printed with original art and design.Listening back to this album now you can see where some of the more modern artists like Ed Sheeran got their inspiration for layering and looping even the most delicate tracks.

Depression at it's best
"What the hell have you got on," a friend inquired as I was talking on the phone today."It's enough to make you slaskh your wrists," he added.Well that's his opinion .I prefer to call it tugging hard on the heart strings ,and why not .I found it powerful to the extreme and as far as as track three goes yes it is by far the most expressive thing on there (Blowers Daughter).Leaving that aside, it is melancholic, self indulgent ,morose .But hey, dont we love being bathed in our thoughts, however sad, once in a while? The orchestral backing also adds to the drama and I personally felt myself drift back into bitter -sweet youth throughout. All you thinkers out there, get it now

Grimly Gorgeous
It's easy to forget. This still packs a hefty punch: as miserable as the sins that surely formed it but pitch perfect in its portraits of pain. Sweet and syrupy yet raw and ribald: and the vinyl is as gorgeous as the heartache.

Masterpiece
I lost my old copy and it wasn't until I heard Cannonball on the radio that I realised how much I needed it in my life again. Each song is exquisite.
