Product Description 2/LP and CD digipack with the "Smile" photo album cover. Vinyl purchase comes with immediate digital download. Donuts began simply enough as an idea to turn a particularly good demo beat tape into a full-length release, and has since became a classic hip-hop album, one of the defining works of the artist's life. Completed during a year in which J Dilla spent mostly in a hospital bed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Donuts would gain particular poignancy when, only three days after it's release, February 10, 2006, the artist passed away, losing his battle with a rare blood disease. Announced in Fall 2005, the concept of a “rap album without rappers” struck some as minor novelty, but Donuts would prove to transcend the rigid definitions of what a hip-hop album could be. It plays part like a DJ mix, part like a hip-hop beat maker at work, its songs starting and stopping unexpectedly, like someone turning the dial on an imaginary radio station. But it's an unmistakably modern album, and one which perfectly encapsulated the artist's reputation among his peers and fans as a top-rated architect of soulful hip-hop. .com Tragically, Donuts was released just three days before J Dilla (aka Jay Dee) passed away from complications arising from lupus--he was only 32. As one of his last projects, though, Donuts is a fitting reflection of Dilla's creativity and an apt tribute (however unintentional) to a career spent as the quintissential producer's producer. Unlike some of Dilla's previous instrumental albums, such as Welcome To Detroit, the songs here are less finished and polished pieces and more caught up in mid-creative motion. Unlike the soft, filtered sound he was known for in the mid-1990s, for Donuts he leaves a variety of soul and jazz loops in plain view but splices and reworks them as a set of sonic jigsaw puzzles. Spontaneous but not sloppy, the capture the late producer at his best--in the throes of his own imagination, each song poised with endless possibilities. --Oliver Wang P.when('A').execute(function(A) { A.on('a:expander:toggle_description:toggle:collapse', function(data) { window.scroll(0, data.expander.$expander[0].offsetTop-100); }); }); Review "Dilla is a drum god. His drums can't ever be topped." -- Kanye West-Scratch Magazine"My favorite producer? J Dilla... Jay Dee, he's bringing it strong." -- Pharrell Williams-BET See more

Grab the Brass Ring
When coming into land at LAX (Los Angeles International Airport), the big donut sign from Randy's Donuts (featured in the album artwork and somewhat in the title) is a familiar sight just off the starboard jet engine and it also represents the big brass ring everyone's looking to grab when they get to LA. Jay Dee reached out and grabbed it. The ubiquitous sound of sirens throughout the album represent to me the ubiquitous sounds of certain communities where ambulance, fire, and police presence is undeniably greater. It is also a love letter to his community. Great album, great artist, his early demise is a massive loss for music. Only the good die young!R.I.P James Yancey aka Jay Dee/J Dilla

"A Masterpiece" (RIP Jay Dee aka J Dilla)
5 stars hands down. Rest in peace to one of the greatest hip hop producers of ALL time. My favorite track is "Time: The Donut of the Heart." I have been playing it on repeat all day, and it's still repeating. This man is a genius. I fell in love with his style the moment I heard it, back in the late 90's, and it stuck with me; never went away. He just had this ear for great music; and what great music should sound like. He's a legend in his own right, and if you're a true hip hop head, or you just love the Jay Dee "signature" sound, you MUST buy this album. His spirit will FOREVER live on in the hearts of all his fans, family, and friends. Detroit for life. RIP Dilla. Your music will continue to make me smile. Yes...We will miss you more than you'll ever know.....

Mostly great condition, amazing album
I received the smile cover. Upon delivery, the plastic wrap seemed quite tight, since the bottom corner of the cover was slightly bent upon arrival. Luckily it didn't harm the record itself, and the cover mostly straightened out after a couple days. Overall fantastic album and purchase, plays great on vinyl.

Legit, Smile Cover, sealed of the magnum opus album Donuts
If you're looking for J Dilla, you already know how amazing his work is. If you're looking at this vinyl, you already know how important this work is. Only thing to talk about really is that I got the Smile cover, it seems to be a flip of the coin if you get the Smile or Donut Shop cover. Honestly, does it really matter? The jams are incredible.
