The epic scale of the Long March can be appreciated as a series of discrete military events. And the stubborn wiliness of the Communists in the face of ongoing disaster becomes remarkable. The narrative is nicely supported with lots of period photographs, battle diagrams, and modern illustrations. The analysis is evenhanded and fascinating. Well recommended as a concise introduction to the event and the period.

This book gives a very basic summatative on the Long March, and its key events and personalities. If like me you start completely ignorant of the event, this non-political account will help the uninformed.

I did not know much about this part of Chinese history. This book really shows and tells the story of the origin of modern China. I was fascinated by the whole story as well as understanding a crucial part of world history.

Awesome book about the Chinese civil war

In 1934 and 1935 the Chinese Communist "soviets" scattered in eastern China were in the process of being surrounded by the KMT, led by Chiang Kai-shek. Soon they would be destroyed by the Chinese nationalists. Their response? March to a new location and concentrate on fighting from there.While much of the success of the communists was due to the incompetence and corruption of the nationalists, the sheer determination and courage of the communists was a factor in their success. With little in the way of advance planning, the March was really a leap into the unknown. The Long March saw men and women crossing huge rivers, climbing mountains, slogging their way through an almost impenetrable marsh and of course fighting man-made obstacles as well. The Long March was China's Valley Forge, Battle of the Bulge and Constitutional Convention all rolled up in one. No wonder it is still such a pivotal event in Chinese history.Well-illustrated with maps, photos and original artwork.

In der Serie "Campaign" des renommierten britischen Militärverlages Osprey erscheint mit "The Long March 1934-35 - The rise of Mao and the beginning of modern China" wieder ein ganz hervorragendes Werk zur Militärgeschichte. Auf 96 Seiten, mit vielen seltenen historischen Fotos und Zeichnungen, erfährt man alle Details zu dem legendären "Langen Marsch", durch welchen es den chinesischen Kommunisten gelang, sich der Zerstörung durch die Nationalchinesen unter Chiang Kaishek zu entziehen. Als quasi Nebeneffekt gelang es Mao Zedong während dieses vielleicht längsten erfolgreichen militärischen Rückzuges aller Zeiten, Stück für Stück seine Macht zu festigen. Besonders erwähnenswert an diesem schönen Werk ist das hervorragende Kartenmaterial. So ist der genaue Rückzugsweg aller drei roten Armeen (1., 2. und 4.) nachzuverfolgen, dazu gibt es detaillierte Karten zu mehreren entscheidenden Schlachten und Gefechten. Auch wenn Mao selber immer log, wenn er von 12.500 km Fußmarsch schwadronierte, so waren es nach aktuellem Forschungsstand doch immerhin 6000 km, welche er mit der Ersten Roten Armee zurücklegte.Ohne den "Langen Marsch" wären die Kommunisten wohl bis 1936 endgültig zerschlagen worden. Und die Geschichte Chinas und somit auch der Welt wäre anders verlaufen. In leicht lesbarem Englisch geschrieben, spannend von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite und mit einer Menge an Fakten, Zeichnungen und Karten ausgestattet, kann ich diesem tollen Werk der Militärgeschichte natürlich nur fünf Sterne geben.

Petit livre d'histoire de la Chine très bien construit et documenté; il se lit vite et bien . D'intéressantes photos d'époque et des cartes et illustrations claires et dynamiques y sont jointes ; elles appuient et facilitent la compréhension. J'y ai découvert que le jeune Mao était un très bon stratège politique : il a su s'allier les leaders nécessaires mais aussi MILITAIRE en repérant, fédérant et s'appuyant sur les cadres et officiers compétents de cette Chine en pleine ébullition, cadres de divers horizons politiques d'ailleurs . Bref un petit ouvrage intelligent sur cette incroyable "Odyssée" moderne; Odyssee moderne qui façonnera "à vif" et à jamais le jeune parti communiste chinois et sa petite armée. Sa guerre de résistance victorieuse aux forces impériales japonaises aguerries le démontrera par la suite.

I've read books about the long march before, but not one of them contained maps. I like this book because it's more thorough.
