Space Warrior Baldios: Complete Tv Series [Blu-ray]

Discotek licensing Baldios was a very nice surprise! This one was lost in the ether until now. Baldios often gets compared to Ideon and it's easy to see why, while it looks like a 70's super robot show on paper, it plays much more like the darker and more serious real robot genre that Sunrise produced a lot of in the 80's. It even takes four episodes to see the main iconic Baldios mecha itself here! So you can tell this series wants to be a space drama first and it's excellent at it. I was very impressed with the production as well, it's a step up from the norm for its time. I got some Leiji Matsumoto vibes at times and it's just a blast all around. Only thing to note is that like Ideon and the original 0079 Gundam, this TV series got cancelled early, so you will want to grab the movie as well for the main conclusion and an awesome one at that, if a bit depressing and grimdark! I believe fans of Ideon, classic Gundam, Votoms, Dunbine, etc would really enjoy this one!

The broadcast ending of the series was the most shocking of all. In the final scene of Prelude to Earth Destruction part 1, it ends with the tidal waves destroying the world with the theme song from the closing credits. It was actually not the final episode, because the show Baldios was cancelled before the next part of the show was broadcast.

First off, this particular anime series ends with a movie and the series itself leaves you in a cliffhanger. If you want to see the whole story, you need to include the movie as well. I am a long time anime fan having been able to watch the robot shows when I was a kid in the 70's and was surprised to see it an Amazon Prime. Before investing much time into this it needs to be realized that this story was originally slotted for 39 episodes, they only made 34, only broadcast 31 originally, and there is a very good reason for this. As before mentioned, Baldios did have a movie, but this is traditional marketing fare for any scifi anime at the time and not an indication of any following the series may have had. The stories end is in the movie because the series got cancelled. The characters are very two dimensional and as the series progressed things just happen to suit the show's environmental message as opposed to a natural progression of character development or narrative. For instance, the main protagonist Marin goes onto the enemy base ship solo, where there are thousands of soldiers, and manages to escape single handed like a super man. However, when it comes to his big heroic moment at the story's climax he horribly chokes to suit agenda. Also a missed opportunity for a possible love triangle between earth girl Jamie, Marin, and alien commander Aphrodia because the series lost its way long before then. The animation is subpar even considering the time it was produced. The series was produced at the time of the original Gundam and Ideon so Baldios did have the opportunity and a studio's willingness to make some different and special. Unfortunately, it ends up in a ditch.

タイトル『宇宙戦士バルディオス（TV版）』ディスク3枚/31話＋3話（未放映分）/1080p一般的な国内プレイヤーで再生出来ます（再生環境/SONYの2015年～の最廉価プレイヤー『BDP-S1500』）。日本語音声のみなので、後は字幕を《OFF》にすれば普通に鑑賞する事が出来ます。映像特典は無し。画質に関しては、過去の国内版の劇場版DVD版（SD）と比べて圧倒的に綺麗になっているので、個人的には文句無しレベル。《TV版コンプリート》商品なので、劇場版が付いていないのが当たり前と言われればそれまでですが、本作は《打ち切り》＆《実は存在していました未放映分》＆《リビルドされた劇場版》を加えて初めて真のエンディングに辿り着くという癖の有る作品なので、劇場版無しの本商品は、作品として尻切れトンボで終わっちゃいます。31話の赤く染まった背景に完のBADEND。その後に続く未放映話の「実は-完-には後編も有るんです」の3話分も、敵に一矢報いる為に登場人物が死にまくるノーマルEND。一応北米版でもバルディオスの劇場版は販売されていますが、私のように大昔に販売されたDVD版を持っている方ならば、購入の是非はお財布事情次第といった所でしょうか。

本当のラストが見たくて、当時劇場版を映画館に観に行ったことを思い出した。テレビ版が何とも中途半端な終わり方をしてしまったので（皆さんの言っている通り突然の打ち切り）、とても期待をしていたために、結構満足感を得た記憶がある。しかしながら今客観的に観てみると、売れっ子のキャストをそろえ、当時のファンに迎合する姿勢がありありと感じられる。冷静に考えれば、オリジナルのキャストに何と失礼なことか。そんな意味でオリジナルキャストの映像が見たくなり、この商品を購入した。荒削りな部分はあるが、葦プロダクションの黄金期を支えた作品として大いに評価できる。色々な意味で、子供向きとしてもティーン向きとしても徹底できなかった、悲劇の傑作と言えるかも知れない。

作品評はさておき、30年以上も前に放映され、かつ打ち切りの憂き目をみたアニメ作品がこうして、まあまあの画質・音質で心ゆくまで観賞できることに素直に感謝。日本版はDVD・BDとも購入したのだが金銭に困って処分してしまった前歴があったので(笑)、再びマリンたちに出会えて大変嬉しい。しかもかなりの廉価で!!!今度こそ一生手放すまい、と心に誓うものである。

OA当時、バッサリ途中打ち切りの最終話「完」の字幕に、唖然としたものです（笑）未放映話がアプコンとか、アラを探せばキリがありませんが、三十数年の年月を経て、こうしてキチンとした結末を目の当たりにする事ができて、感謝感激です。国内のプレーヤーで再生可、字幕も消せます。

購入して届いたら、中からカラカラ音がする･･･これ、ディスク中で外れて傷だらけだよね；開けるべきか、返品するべきか･･･
