This very unusual plant has a common name of the Ombu (or Umbu) Tree or Elephant Tree and can grow to a height and spread of 20m! Its branches develop from its Caudiciform Trunk which itself can be massive in mature specimens - up to 30m in circumference! Very fast-growing It is native to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay grasslands and its water storing trunk is fire resistant to protect itself from the grass fires that occur naturally, and also to store water supply for the dry season. Although this tree will become quite large! it would make an ideal candidate for a Bonsai, or if kept in small pots, its growth will be stunted! It is also planted in places like Southern California as a shade tree. Drought-tolerant; suitable for xeriscaping Parts of plant are poisonous if ingested Average Water Needs; Water regularly; do not over-water Full Sun to Part Shade Hardy zones 9 and above
