Dorothea Tanning Paperback – 1 Nov. 2018

Most of the women artists involved with the surrealist movement have been under-appreciated and poorly represented in art history, so it's really important that that error should be addressed; this paperback book has been published as the catalogue for the Tanning retrospective at Tate Modern – a welcome showing of her work – but the book is rather a disappointment.The paper used feels cheap, with a bleached, thin quality; the reproductions seem anaemic and muted in colour – I've certainly seen better reproductions in other volumes.While I'm relatively pleased to see any new book on Tanning, she certainly deserves better presentation than this offers; fortunately, a new hardback from Lund Humphries is on the way which hopefully will do her work justice (it is quite a bit more expensive than this though.)Buy this for the useful texts and the overview it offers, but the illustrations aren't – in my view, anyway – truly representative of her paintings.3 ½ stars ideally.

Sadly the book I ordered was lost by the Royal Mail. However I did get a copy of Dorothea Tanning's book from Tate Modern who have currently a exhibition of her work. The book is a superb souvenir of the exhibits on show. I have always been a fan of Surrealism and Dorothea Tanning is one of my favourites a highly underrated Artist. I can recommend both the Exhibition (Running until 9th June 2019) and the book.

The exhibition is amazing, this does not do it justice. The quality of paper and images are poor, disappointing. I haven't read all the contents yet so can't pass comment on that.

Couldn't make the exhibition that this book was published to accompany, so I shopped around to find a much better price here than offered at the Tate's own shop. Well pleased.
