Wow
I'm going back and forth on whether I want to give this 4 or 5 stars. I think I want to give it 4.5.I've passed this movie up for years. Sometimes it has sounded mildly interesting, other times not at all. Today I decided to give in and watch it. I'm glad I did! There's quite a bit I like about it. I was drawn in to the characters, the setting, and the story right away and loved every single person. The protagonists are likeable and the antagonist is convincing and dreadful. The cinematography is beautiful and well done and has a very natural feel to it. I've owned the soundtrack for a while (despite not having seen the movie earlier, that's just how I am with soundtracks!): the soundtrack is OK on its own, kind of average, but is much better when paired with the movie; it is very complimentary.I'm surprised how engrossed I got in the story and attached to the characters I became. For a director's definitive cut, I am, at the end of it, a bit disappointed there wasn't more content. I think I needed a little better and a little more character development between Hawkeye and Cora to make it more believable. I would have also liked to see more development of and between Hawkeye, Uncas, and Chingachgook. And a little less time spent showing canons and mortars blowing up the set; that contributed less to the story development than time spent on characters would have.It was relieving to watch a movie without any profanity and sexual content (aside from a nearly 1 minute long scene of passionate kissing...it could have been reduced in length, I'm just saying). The depicted violence was expected, but a few parts could have easily been left out to avoid unnecessary graphic detail. This all goes along with my advocating that movie makers trust movie watchers' imagination more than they do.All of this, so far, is a 5 star movie. I'd overlook the missed opportunity for more character development because even as is I felt connected with them, but why I don't want to give it 5 stars comes down to the ending, which if I went into detail would spoil it. It's memorable, and certainly endears you to one of the characters, but parts of it are unsatisfying and disappointing, and I can't help but feel like it could have been done better and I could have ended with a better overall feeling.Do I recommend this movie? Yes, it's a great movie and I really enjoyed it and would enjoy watching it again. It's just not a perfect movie.

Love this movie…even though it is quite sad and violent…such was the colonial period. The sound track is amazing!!!!

My FAVORITE movie, ever!
First of all, I read a long review about this Director's Cut version, and couldn't disagree more with that review saying the additional was just "padding".This version is magnificent. I always had a feeling the commercial versions of the movie for purchase or rent were pushing the story too fast. This version, which is 122 minutes long: 11 more minutes. Those 11 minutes make the movie much more enjoyable to watch: the tension of the story builds more slowly; the added scenic shots were glorious, with one being an incredible sunset. More of the action, too. Instead of the final death blow in the fight scenes, you see the fight. The producers and director put a LOT of emphasis on authenticity with all weapons, and proper use of them. All the actors had to know how to carry, shoot, and use their weapons. Watch Wes Studi, Daniel Day Lewis, and the two men who play his step-father and step-brother.I have loved this movie for 30 years. I focus on something different every time. Music, scenery, story, characters.I read a back-story about making the film and was impressed that the extras casted for the Indian warriors were actually brought in from indigenous American tribes from all over the US. When I first saw the movie, I thought they were all local military personnel, but now know they were all of Indian heritage. Just another attention to detail. If you watch the credits, there is a statement that the makers of the film were grateful to the Six Nations of Tribes for their participation. To me, a full banquet of a movie!

So real !... So beautiful !... So intense !
Image, landscapes, story line, acting, music, everything in that movie is strong. The Last of the Mohicans is a classic North America series probably well known by almost everybody on this continent. But this time, the producers introduced it as a movie with so much conviction, reality and beauty, that you forget entirely the difference between the old versions and this one. And this one is far more interesting than any other before and is far more interesting because of that conviction, reality and beauty. I'm telling you, If you enjoyed that last century classic, believe me, you do not want to miss this one.

Extremely disappointed with Amazon!
Last of the Mohicans I purchased this DVD in October 2011. The product description states that it was released in 2002. I was replacing my beloved VHS tape (which I still have, thank God!!) Recently I was reading all the reviews on the "director's definitive cut" version and when I took out my copy I had bought from Amazon in 2011 I was relieved to see that the front did not have the expanded directors cut written on it, however, when I opened the box and looked at the disc itself it was not released in 2002 but 2010!!! I looked at the back of the box and sure enough the date was 2010, the aspect ratio was different and the length of the movie was different as well.So what I ordered was NOT what I received from Amazon. Last night I had the urge to watch The Last of the Mohicans since I had not watched this movie in years. When I received my DVD from Amazon I didn't look at the information on the back of the box or disc because I assumed I was getting exactly what the description described. When I put the DVD into my bluray player I was shocked to see that it indeed said "directors definitive cut"!! I was more than furious to say the least. The description of this DVD gave no indication that it was the terrible directors version. So it appears that I was sent the DVD released in 2010 and NOT in 2002.It's a shame that back in 2011 I did not read the reviews on this expanded directors edition however, I thought I was not getting that version since it did not say it was that version. I can't believe that Amazon would send me the wrong disc and it's my terrible mistake not to look at the back of the disc when I received it.What was Micheal Mann thinking??? I found that I did not enjoy this version as much as I did with my VHS tape which I watched over and over again. How could he cut out that beautiful song "I will find you" as they are running up the stone cliffs?? It really did take away from that scene in a big way among other omissions and the add-ins did nothing for me. I ordered the bluray version of this movie but will cancel it because I don't want another copy of this version even though it's only $7. Hopefully the original version of this movie will see the light of day again on DVD and bluray. So a word of caution, you don't really know what your getting until you receive it. I included the link to the version of the copy I bought as well as included two pictures of the case and disc.UPDATE ON MY REVIEWWell, I didn't cancel my order for the bluray version of this movie firstly because of the price and secondly I just had to see this awesome movie in bluray. I am happy now that I did go ahead and get it. The Clannad song is indeed in this bluray version however part of it is cut off but at least most of it is still in the movie. I have loved this movie from the first time I saw it. The scenery is spectacular and the music score is perfect for this film. The bluray quality is beautiful. Daniel Day-Lewis gives a commanding performance and fits the role of Hawkeye perfectly. This film was my first introduction to him and left me a fan of his for life! Don't hesitate in getting this film. This differences in the bluray version are minimal so don't let other reviews deter you from purchasing this wonderful film! Last of the Mohicans

should be watched by all peoples of North America
A sad story. Some embellishment but probably a realistic portrayal of what it was like during the war between France and England in North America and its effect on the First Nations peoples. The destroyed lives and extinction of a tribe of people that lived in New England for hundreds of years prior to the Europeans. This movie should be watched by all North Americans. My favorite scene was the surrender of the fort by the English to the French. The exaggerated pomp and ceremonial rites of each side. The way civilized people used to behave toward each other.

2hrs of Daniel Day Lewis running in the forest....
I read a critique once about the Last of the Mohicans that described it as 2 hrs of Daniel Day Lewis running in the forest with a sound track.. Pretty much describes it. If you don't like the musical score, don't buy the movie, the acting is marginal.

Subtitles
The film was excellent. However I am hard of hearing - the package offered "Subtitles: English for the hard of hearing" but the subtitles did not work which was a big let down. I have downgraded my rating accordingly.I have since resolved my problem and the subtitles are now operating and I have re-rated my opinion to 5 stars and apologies for my earlier response.
