Mentalizing in Clinical Practice

If you are a psychotherapist and you are interested in the very foundation of what makes the therapeutic encounter helpful, regardless of your orientation, then this book is for you. If you are interested in how the crucible of the early attachment relationships influences the clients ability to connect with other minds, as well as their own mind, then this book is for you. If you enjoy reading remarkably well researched, written, and edited books that might be slightly out of your reach (intellectually), in other words, if you like to be stimulated and challenged by clear thinking and concise argument then this book is for you.You can get a good taste of the book on Google Books preview. The best bits are left out of that preview but for such an investment I suggest you check it out there first. I don't want to be responsible for buyer's remorse.Other books I would put in the category might be "The Developing Mind" by Siegel and "The Archaeology of Mind" by Panksepp and Biven.I should have written this review years ago. I feel like I owe it to the authors for their wonderful creation. Better late than never.

This book is a good resource for psychotherapists. It is also a good introduction to the concept of "Mentalization," which as the authors state is already part of many psychotherapeutic approaches. I would recommend the book to anyone interested in learning more about this concept as the book is well written and organized.

Great resource material.

Excellent, informative book!

Although quite motivated to learn more about the practice of Mentalisation Based Therapy , having attended a workshop on the subject, I found this book a bit boggy. While the authors tried to embed Mentalisation within Attachment Theory and other theories of psychotherapy quite successfully, it felt like Mentalisation could be covered in 5 pages without this theoretical discussion. Anyway I know a bit more about it now but might not be tempted to read anymore books by these authors sadly.

臨床心理学者・精神分析家のフォナギーと精神科医・精神分析家のベイトマンによって開発されたメンタライゼーション・ベイスト・セラピー（ＭＢＴ）が世界的に注目されている。本書の筆頭著者のアレンは、アメリカのメニンガー・クリニックの臨床心理学者・精神分析家でフォナギーらと連携して、この視点を発展させている人である。メンタライジングあるいはメンタライゼーションとは、自分や他者の（広い意味での）行動を、その人の精神状態（心理状態）と関連させて理解する能力のことである。つまり、自分が、あるいは他者がある言動をしたとき、その背後にどのような感情、意図、願望などがあるのかを推測する能力のことである。このメンタライジング（メンタライゼーション）の視点は、アタッチメント理論、「心の理論」と関連した思考の発達についての心理学的な実証研究、精神分析を統合した視点と言ってもよい。従来の精神分析とは異なり、臨床実践だけでなく、実証的研究をふんだんに取り入れ、根拠のある心理療法を目指している点が、新しい時代の精神分析と言うことができる。この視点に関する日本語訳の既刊書としては『メンタライゼーションと境界パーソナリティ障害』と『メンタライゼーション・ハンドブック』（いずれも岩崎学術出版社）があるが、前者は境界パーソナリティ障害に特化しており、後者はその他の領域もカバーしてはいるが、この視点の概念の解説が十分でなく包括的テキストとは言い難い。また、この２書は、訳者のほとんどが精神科医であり、発達心理学に関する知識が十分でないせいか、訳語が不適切だったり、わかりにくかったりする部分がある。それに比べて、本書においては、メンタライジングについて基礎から包括的に解説がなされている。とくに第１〜３章をじっくり読むと、メンタライジングの理論が基礎からよく理解できる。ただし、この１〜３章を本当に理解するためには、「心の理論」と関連した思考の発達（認知発達）についての心理学的知識が必要であり、この領域にくわしくない人には、本書は難解だと感じられるかもしれない。しかし、この点をクリアすれば、メンタライジング理論の基本的な考え方が本当によくわかる書物である。第５章と第６章には、メンタライジングの視点から実際の心理療法におけるセラピストの姿勢や応答技法について触れられており、メンタライジングの視点からの心理療法的面接がどのようなものなのかのイメージがつかみやすい。これが既刊の和訳書と比較したときに本書が断然優れている点である。読者は、この視点による面接の斬新さに、目から鱗が落ちる思いがするであろう。そして第７章以降では、メンタライジングの視点の応用分野が概説されている。たとえば、愛着外傷の治療、境界パーソナリティ障害の治療、家族療法、心理教育、学校などに暴力への対応などが紹介されている。少なくとも、現在までに出版されているフォナギー、アレン、ベイトマンによるメンタライジング関連の書籍の中では、本書が最も包括的なテキストと言える。英語で読むのが大変という人は、現在日本語訳が進行中とのことなので、訳書を待ってもよいだろう。
