Genesis: Every Album, Every Song (On Track)

Very interesting
I've loved most of the Gabriel/Hackett albums for 45 years. The exception has been The Lamb... which has a convoluted concept, and a different feeling musically than the albums before and after it.I have found this book very interesting to read on the albums I haved enjoyed for many years. It's also given me a better appreciation of The Lamb...As for the Collins, Banks, Rutherford band that continued the brand, I've tended to be rather dismissive of their efforts, aside from a few good pop rock singles.I still don't feel there's anything to rival the earlier greatness, but Duke in particular, has been re-rated higher. I've also listened to the other albums with more insight and interest. This book is for most Genesis fans who want to know more about their music. If you are already an extremely keen fan, who has read everything, and you read along to the lyrics when you listen to the albums, then it's probably got little to offer you.The book is also part of a series with tight editorial guidelines. They are all very similar in format and level of detail. I've now built up quite a series of them, and have just bought the Steve Hackett book, so I can get more from his solo albums.

Good stuff
I've really enjoyed working my way through my Genesis CD and DVD collection alongside this book.To microscopically nit-pick (and these are no way deserving of losing a star), there's a 'program' in there - the author's not talking about computers, so where's the missing 'me'? Also there's a 'gotten' in there, which seems a bit out of place (transatlantic) when talking about a very English band (both in style and heritage) such as Genesis (yes, I know that Ray Wilson is Scottish - as is the author of this book). Oh, and finally, there's a "Face value" when talking about Phil Collins' first album - should be a capital 'V' of course!See, very minor proofreading errors, and nothing to be too bothered about; that they're just mentioned is simply to prove that I've actually been reading the book (I've not read every word [yet] so there may be more) - which I will do, again and again, as it's a book I'm glad I bought. Oh, and as an aside, I now have five of the books in this series, and hope (one day) to purchase more - maybe one could be written about the solo albums by PC, PG, MR, TB, SH, RW etc? I'd buy it.To sum up; informative, educating and enlightening. Five stars.PS Is this August 2022 release (mine is from 2019) a simple reprint or an updated version? If an updated version then does it cover the recent/probably last tour with PC sadly sitting on stage just singing and not drumming?

SOME SONGS GET A SYNOPSIS...
A rather interesting read.Let's go straight for the throat of The Lamb. Each track has a very brief synopsis which doesn't really add anything to what is in Gabriel's lyrics.I have deliberately cropped Afterglow, but this will show you what is discussed in the songs. One star is knocked off because some descriptions are too basic and are obvious to the listening ear.A slightly larger than the standard paperback. Loads of information and it's nicely laid out chronologically.

A Fabulous track by track account of Genesiswritten by an expert and a fan.
This is the third book in the On Track series I`ve bought, the previous two being Yes and Jethro Tull, and it exceeded my expectations. It is extremely well researched and provides a truly interesting and educational review of all of the Genesis tracks and also the extra numbers that were left off albums such as Twilight Alehouse and the Spot the Pigeon and 3x3 EP`s. The writer is obviously a lifelong fan ( so am I ) and has a very easy going writing style. It has me digging out all the old albums and enjoying them again. Highly recommended.

Great for fans and for those who just enjoy a good read
I bought this book as a diehard Genesis fan and was not disappointed as it gave an excellent overview of the band and their music. My wife, who is not a fan but an avid reader picked it up and then read it cover to cover. She enjoyed it as a well written commentary and the soundtrack to our youth. So an enjoyable, well researched book for both Genesis fans and also for those of a certain age who just want to reminisce and enjoy a really good read.

Not the best in the series
I found this book a bit more superficial than some of the other books in this series, and it contains some glaring errors as well. For instance, the book states at least three (!) times that the cover of Duke was designed by Hipgnosis with illustrations by Lionel Koechlin. However, while the drawing is indeed by Lionel Koechlin, art direction was in the hands of Bill Smith, who would also design the covers of the three albums that were to follow (Abacab, Three Sides Live and Genesis). It's concise and Genesis really deserves a more comprehensive book, like Benoît Clerc's book on David Bowie.

Excellent resume of all Genesis albums
As a Genesis fan since 1974 I am very pleased with this track by track trawl through the musical history of Genesis. Very thorough and has inspired me to go through the albums and find some forgotten gems. Includes the live albums, complications, box sets and videos. Well written and the author isn't afraid to give his opinions although he is clearly a fan!

Analysis or review?
Many years ago (late 1990s) I bought a CD-wallet-sized book called "The Complete Guide to the music of Genesis" by Chris Welch (still available through Amazon). Welch described the album "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" variously as "a convoluted mess" and "lamentable", celebrating the final track "It" with the words "Hallelujah, the end is in sight". In Stuart Macfarlane's book here, however, he sings The Lamb's praises and describes it as "probably [his] favourite of all progressive rock albums". I am more inclined toward Welch's opinion of the album, though I certainly don't feel so strongly about it, but this example serves to show how subjective this type of book can be, where rather than a neutral analysis of the songs and albums, the reviews tend only to reflect the author's tastes and opinions. I would therefore advise, "approach with caution". Both books have their merits, but I wouldn't take either of them too seriously.

Zero song lyrics
I was expecting the lyrics to every song released, even b-sides, there is nothing but descriptions and opinions... Don't waste your time or money on this, chances are the other 91 books in the series doesn't have lyrics either...
