2 Pack Magnesium Fire Starter

Never struggle with fire making again.
Wow, this stuff gets really hot! Wondering if these things work? They really work like crazy! The short chunk of hacksaw on the keychain is junk but the last one of these bars lit about 200 fires and was in my pocket of my day pack for more than a decade. It would have lit a thousand more but I lost it. So I got two more! Here is the skinny. I use a big sharp knife. I shave off a pile of the magnesium about the size of a quarter and about 3 pennies high. This takes a couple of minutes, not seconds, relax and do it right. Once it's done you flip it over and scrape some sparks onto the pile and WHAMMO, this stuff catches and burns for a few seconds at about 500 degrees I think. I have the pile of a bit of pine bark with some dry kindling like toothpick size underneath and then start feeding larger stuff on the top as it goes up. I quit smoking years ago and carrying a lighter just wasn't a habit so this is inert until it's shaved down, safe to carry. I keep one in my go bag and another in the truck...

Comes with a steel shaver/striker attached
Product is painted heavily unlike the military version it mimics, so it you have Not used these before you will have to remove the heavy outer coating before getting to the magnesium to scrape it easily... nice that it comes with a steel shaver/ striker....too bad the two parts are not better connected. Solid value which will definitely store well.

Item not as pictured, but works great.
My wife has been excited about learning to fend for herself if needed and she wanted to be able to make fire. This fire starter is perfect. Only complaint and the reason I paid a little more for this one is because of the green striker (she loves green). The striker is actually black like the other cheaper ones.

I've been watching Survivor and wanted to try my hand at making fire.
This product does the trick. I think it's a great product to have for the backpack. Why buy it? Well, unlike a lighter this thing isn't going break or malfunction, and unlike matches it's not going to get ruined if it gets wet. Plus there's something satisfying about starting a fire with magnesium and flint. Everyone should have one in their backpack or bug out bag.

Hard to scrape.
It’s a bit hard to scrape enough magnesium bits into a pile so you can get it lit. I used the little metal piece it came with and tried to scrape magnesium off for about 2 minutes and barely got enough to make the size of a quarter.

Good value good product
I am a big firm believer in the use of magnesium flakes to start a fire I usually use cotton mixed with Vaseline and I'll put a few of these magnesium flakes on top of the cotton or inside the cotton and within three strikes you got yourself a fire and the cotton will burn for at least a minute or two just enough to get your fire going I take a magnesium bar with me everywhere I go there's small you could just put it in your pocket take it everywhere you go and I've never had an issue or a problem with any magnesium bar
