Out of the box and go!
Based on other reviews I ordered these for hiking and what a great buy! right out of the box they were comfortable and we hiked 3.5 miles the first day with no issues. They did not need a break in period at all. I did go up 1/2 a size and am glad I did. Room for toes and thicker socks.

Perfect for Alaska Cruise
So comfortable and kept my feet warm and dry recently in rainy Alaska. I’m not a hiker, but i walked over 10,000 steps sightseeing each port. I like that they were wider and I could wear wool socks. The bottoms are well designed which kept me from slipping. Not a huge amount of arch support which I prefer.

Don't order up
I am very happy with this purchase:I am of grandmother age but it was a 30ish niece that complimented me on the shoes. As others have said, they were comfortable out of the box. Don't seem to need breaking in.I wore them to a goat farm and where I was able to try them out on rocks, and the walking was comfortable. These shoes are not over-padded and one gets to feel the ground. This is a plus. One does not want to turn off the sensors in the foot. I purchased them for the good reviews on the Vibram soles.I am size 8 in open shoes, and in closed shoes normally will buy the 8.5. Here, after reading the reviews, took the gamble and went for the 8. Happy I did so. These shoes are wide in the front, leaving ample room for the toes, even with a thick sock.I am looking forward to trying these shoes on hikes and walks. They are lightweight enough to also wear them as the bulkiest pair of shoes when traveling with just carryon abroad. I have been easily able to slip them on and off. They seem sturdy.

Supportive, comfy, unattractive shoe
I've had these shoes for almost two years now. I originally ordered them largely because I was having a hard time finding decent quality hiking shoes with wide sizes. I eventually settled on these, despite thinking they looked like the ugliest features of a sneaker combined with the ugliest features of a hiking boot.Even at my most out of shape, walking in these has always been easy. They're extremely comfortable and very supportive, while still allowing my foot to move. I haven't used them a lot in the two years I've had them, but I have taken them out for a few longer distances (for a casual hiker) and I've been incredibly pleased with their performance. Hiking over rocky surfaces and jumping around on slippery grass, I've never had a complaint about how these shoes feel.I've worn these shoes in snowy, slushy, and wet conditions, and I've only ever had an issue with water when the top of the toe box was submerged for a long step in a creek. Even then, they dried out well and were wearable again the next day without feeling like I was putting on a wet shoe.If you're looking for performance and don't care about aesthetics, I highly recommend this shoe. If you want something versatile enough to wear out to a nice dinner after your long day of walking, though, this isn't it.

GREAT hiking shoe
I recently outgrew my old hiking boots and needed a new pair. I was torn between getting ankle support or not, worried about potential blisters. In the end, I went with the classic ankle cut hiking shoes, and they held up perfectly on my 7.5-mile hike today! No break-in period needed—they fit perfectly straight out of the box and are true to size. I'm really happy with them!

I normally love merrell, they fit well and are usually very comfortable
I’ve already owned a few Merrills and have liked them a lot; they fit well, quality materials, but this has been strange because the shoe size 11 which i normally wear, and is a bit big for me but I need the length, is very wide in the toes. 10 1/2 didn’t quite fit which I thought would, was wide in the toes too, and for all the Merrell shoes I’ve ever worn or tried on this is the most uncomfortable foot bed they’ve ever put in a shoe. It’s the insert and it’s hard! What’s strange is that the last shoe I ordered was actually leather and this one looks like it was punched out of artificial material and it also doesn’t say leather on the label anymore? What’s that about? I love the tread, and color, but they don’t run large like everyone said, but wide. Amazon charges manipulated pricing which makes shopping with them less desirable but the ordering and returns work nicely. I decided for the money to go waterproof esp. after reading you cannot waterproof the material yourself. So I ordered brindle and, the 11 fits much smaller, but might still work. I have to change out the inserts, ( hard). I’m debating between it and Columbia which has a somewhat softer bed, and wider fit. The Merrell has a little flaw on it but might not be a big issue. Quality is not the same as before. Certainly not comfort and consistency. Why doesn’t the label say leather anymore? My other Merrill’s are very comfortable to walk in. These require different inserts, and at least, and some breaking in? Still an overall nice design. Think I’ll try to find more out about the leather upper that doesn’t say anything anymore.

OK
The shoe was too wide and didn't fit right in the toe area. I'm not sure it was designed like this or if it was just the wrong size for me. The sole looked very good and sturdy. I didn't care for the overall clunkiness look if it.It would be a great shoe if you like room at the toes!I've returned and ordered a different shoe.
