Island of Dragons (Geronimo Stilton and the Kingdom of Fantasy)

Super fun and wonderfully illustrated!
I found this book on Amazon while looking for an illustrated chapter book series for my then 5 year old daughter. My daughter is an advanced reader, 2-3rd grade level, but very visual and needs illustrations to help her understand the characters. This book is amazing for that and much more. The Kingdom of Fantasy series features an ordinary mouse, Geronimo Stilton, who becomes extraordinary when he travels to the Kingdom of Fantasy. One of the many things I love about this series is that Geronimo is a fearful mouse who helps save people in spite of his fears. My daughter has Sensory Processing Disorder and an anxiety disorder. She gets so much from the fact that Geronimo Stilton can power through and be brave even if he’s scared while doing it. Another thing I appreciate, in light of her anxiety disorder, is that there is no violence or scary stuff. There are several “bad guys” but good always wins. There are also “battle” scenes but they are so benign and the villains only say “we’ll meet again.” As a “words matter” person, I truly appreciate that there is also no disrespectful language either. It bugs me so much when books even include the words stupid or dumb because I’ve taught my daughter that we don’t talk like that. These books include none of that language, which I’m grateful for. We are currently reading #11 and we can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

Engaging Plot and Narrative for Young Readers, Even Hesitant Ones
My 7 year old grandson loves this book, and the whole Geronimo Stilton Kingdom of Fantasy series is probably his favorite. But I met a mom whose 10 year old girl also enjoys these. So that's a good age spread.Attractive and strong cover and binding. This book encourages unenthusiastic readers to engage in the story, through graphic and expressive lettering / fonts, liberal illustrations, fascinating maps and charts, and of course the good humor of the smartest mouse of all, the funny, brilliant, and humble Geronimo Stilton. Lots to get engrossed in. Great gift.

Another excellent tale.
My son loves Geronimo's Kingdom of Fantasy series and we take turns reading it aloud. This lacks some of the continuity between other Kingdom of Fantasy books but the story itself is very good, nice flow. Illustrations top notch as always. New characters are also very good without getting too many. I like some of the words used in this one which help build vocabulary for the expected reading age (examples: voracious, scrounge).Highly recommended. If I had to choose an ideal age group, it would be 2nd-4th grade, but I'd argue older kids might find it enjoyable.Moldy mozzarella, why does this type of thing always happen to Geronimo?

Disappointed. Doesn’t follow the previous books in series.
My kids are complaining that the book isn’t as good as the others. Feels like the authors totally missed the mark on this one, including Geronimo’s personality traits and dragon characters. The story does not pick up from the previous book and my kids who are avid Geronimo readers are disappointed. There were also printing errors in this book. They were excited about the 13th book coming about, but not anymore.

Great as a child's first chapter book
Grabbed this for my eight-year old daughter for Christmas despite not knowing if my daughter knew anything about the intellectual property. She likes dragons and fantasy stories, so it looked like something that might encourage her to spend more time reading instead of gravitating towards picture books. I was really pleasantly surprised to see that the text itself made excellent use of colour and even shape with its layout. Very pleasing to the eye, and definitely did the trick to grab my daughter's attention and get her reading more "chapter books". Fun story too. Will likely end up with more of these.
