helpful at a time when needed
Read this book 3 weeks after the birth of my little girl. It was very helpful in getting a more balanced feeling about all the information out there that you consume prior to birth. Its a simple practical book with not a lot of detail. Written in a style more similar to having a good chat over coffee with someone on how to proceed with the cycle of feeding, play and sleep. Initially did find trying to play after a feed difficult but would attempt a few minutes before she passed out from a good feed, as she got older this became easier and now at 7 months she eats, plays and then sleeps beautifully. By 10 weeks she was sleeping 5hrs during the night. Its a very helpful book but doesnt have the micro detail other books have.

A must read for any new parent
Book arrived promptly. Gives a wonderful structured approach while leaving some flexibility and plenty of data to back up the theory

Easy to follow and effective
Simple strategy. Easy to follow. Bit preachy, but REALLY DOES WORK.

Common sense however a bit tedious
I was recommended this book by an american friend who swore by it and said it had helped her get her daughter into a routine where she would sleep through the night by 8 weeks. I admit that I didnt follow it word for word but did try to stick to the basic principles of sleep - awake - feed - play time - sleep but at 6 months my child will sleep from 6pm to 10pm be up twistig then sleep if i am lucky to 6am. I say if I am lucky as it most certainly isnt every night. From what I have learnt from all of my baby groups you can do everything by the book and your child will do what they want anyway so although this has good principles it isnt a miracle worker. I also didnt like how much it made out breastfeeding was the only way! Something I find infuriating in fact.

Useful guide
I personally really like this book, it followed my ideas and reiterated the common sense approach to looking after your baby. I would say this is not for everyone especially if you cant or don't want to leave your baby to cry as this is how you get them to self sooth! For all the haters of this book and approach, my baby has not been harmed/scarred from following this approach he still loves me and smiles at me every time I walk into the room. Babies are not born knowing how to sleep/nap, your job as a parent is to show them how to! I found my baby more distressed from tiredness Before starting this than from getting him into a routine! My health visitor said young babies can't get into a routine until 6-7months, well my little one has been in a routine since about 3 months. I will be honest he hasn't slept through the night since then (at about 4 months) and it is still work in progress but I couldn't imagine not having a set routine to our day, he is much happier since knowing what his day will involve. I am not constricted by his routine and make it flexible, so unlike Gina Fords strict routine this is very achieveable and not too stressful!
