Works great! READ the description before buying and the manual afterwards.
READ THE DESCRIPTION and the MANUAL! This works perfectly IF you have one of the older M.2 Drives that are NOT nvme/PCIE. I had a Crucial MX500 1TB M.2 SSD and it works perfectly in this enclosure. As a matter of fact, it was a bit of a challenge finding an enclosure that WOULD work with my older SSD. Very well packaged, seems well made and even includes a tiny little screwdriver for the microscopic screws included to secure the SSD and the case. I did have to go into the Computer Manager and Disk Manager to manually initialize the drive (As it says to do in the manual...) before it was recognized.

Nice for the price, but pay attention to the description
Caveat - as you'll see in the review below, I did not get this to work with my hard drive due to my own mistake, but I'll review it assuming it would have worked.I bought this to recover the data on my hard drive when my laptop unexpectedly bit the dust. Unfortunately, I have an NVMe hard drive and it did not work with this enclosure, whomp whomp. That was my mistake. It does say in the description that it does not work with NVMe hard drives, only SATA, but I just went by the pictures of the slot where you plug in the drive - my drive looked like the pictures and I bought without noticing. So don't do what I did - pay attention to the description. I'm going to assume that it would have worked had I possessed a SATA hard drive because the computer actually *did* see that something was plugged in, it just wouldn't read the drive. The enclosure is pretty easy to use, but there are better ones for a few extra dollars (e.g. Sabrent feels sturdier and is easier to swap drives). I did not deduct a star for that since it is very reasonably priced, but keep it in mind depending on your needs. This enclosure feels plasticky, but sturdy. To get to the drive, you have to pull out the slot and it makes a grating noise when you do so. This is probably not a problem unless you plan to frequently switch out the drive. Inside there are several clips to secure the hard drive. As mine was the longest variety, I had some trouble getting the hard drive to seat down into the clip. After reading other reviews, I realized that the clips to secure the smaller size drives get in the way and cause the drive to bow slightly. You can bend those clips backward out of the way (and should if you have a long drive to prevent the drive from eventually warping). Once you've bent the clips out of the way, the hard drive fits fine, although then the clips do slightly get in the way when you slide the black portion back into the silver enclosure. Again, probably only a problem if you switch them out frequently. Finally, there is a tiny screw to secure the black and silver pieces together. They nicely provided an extra screw as well as a small screwdriver, which was a nice touch. Honestly, I probably won't even use the screw unless I'm transporting the drive - as I mentioned, the inner slot fits tightly inside to the point that it grates a bit when you pull it out so it's unlikely to fall out with normal use. A final note, the enclosure came with a USB A to USB C cord along with an adaptor to convert the A side to a C plug. That was a nice touch - rather than pick one they provided options. I do not know enough to know if the A side with C adaptor would affect the transfer speed (as opposed to C to C), but if you don't have a C port on your computer, a C to C plug would not work at all. It was a nice touch like the extra screw and screwdriver to ensure that you can use the enclosure out of the box without searching the house for tiny screwdrivers or cables.

Cheap plastic renders it useless out of the box
The slot to plug in the SSD was warped and misshaped. I spent 10 minutes trying to finess my SSD into the slot and tried using some tools to reshape and remove some of the plastic on the slot where it plugs in. I then got mad and just threw it away. OBVIOUSLY some people may get one that is correctly made, but is that a risk you want to take when there are so many other options? And for the record, I know what I am doing and this was the plastic around the plug itself, NOT the clips or anything else.

Used to upgrade laptop's storage.
The aluminum housing dissipates heat well. After lots of use, the case just felt warm to the touch. It never got hot. The included heavy-duty 8-inch data/power cable and the USB-C adapter also worked well. I bought this M.2 SATA SSD enclosure adapter to upgrade my HP Elitebook 840 G3 laptop's storage from 256GB to 512GB. This conversion/upgrade was easy, went very smoothy and was completely successful. Since the laptop uses an M.2 SATA SSD, this enclosure adapter was the best inexpensive solution and ideal for the purpose. First, I placed a new 512GB drive into the adapter, and cloned my laptop's 256GB drive (with Macrium Reflect). Second, I replaced the laptop's internal 256GB drive with the newly cloned 512GB drive. Third, as a bonus, I put my laptop's old 256GB drive into this enclosure and saved 15 years of Google Photos on it. Since the process was so easy, and everything went so smoothly, I'm extremely satisfied with this product.
