compact sterilizer, not filter
this is a compact unit, about the size of 3 kindles or phones stacked on top of each other. it is a dedicated UV sterilizer. the intake opposite the power head shows light if set/held in the right position, so you can see its working. This met all my needs; free standing - it is a pain to maintain an inline sterilizer; ability to set in sump, in several positions, what's best for your system, even in the tank; flow rate - slower is better for killing algae, bacteria, other tiny nasties. the small powerhead is rated 45-50 gph, and the unit box says its rated for 90 gal tanks, seems to be working as desired in a system double that size. its not a filter and I wouldn't expect it to act as one, just sterilizing, and reducing need for chemicalsthe only draw back was the bulb, being epoxied, I imagine it can't be replaced (easily). the life span should be good for about a year, you could try a timer I guess, but its usually the on/off that kills a lampdepending on price I would get another, either when this one dies ( in a year or more, I hope), or for my other tank.I had considered other units, they were mostly UV & filter, though i wasn't going to filter, using the filter sponges seems to contradict what the UV is for, they also had pretty fast water flow, this was competitively priced so I took a shot and so far am very pleased
