Excilent watercolor pencils
I got a few different brands of watercolor pencils to test at the same time I got these. In comparison to other watercolor pencils, these have a smooth lay down. They are not as soft as Supracolor by Caran D'ache, they fall in the middle, not too soft that you run through them fast but not so hard that you have to grind them to fill the tooth of the paper.Dry layering is about average, if you fill the tooth of the paper adding layers is difficult, which is average as far as colored pencil handling goes. They are difficult to blend when dry, when using the the white colored pencil to blend, you can smooth rough edges and feather colors but you can't really blend them. For washing I would recommend using a water brush or a stiff scrubber brush to activate these. The pencils do leave behind light 'ghosting' of pencil marks on the paper, some colors do not dissolve as easily without a bit of scrubbing. The color lifts off the paper easier then other brands, so if you like to make lifts you will want to give these a try. Other brands lift too but you can come back to these after they have dried and lift the color much more easily. This could be a pro or a con depending on how you work. It does make layering with watercolor pencils a bit difficult, especial if you plan on 'activating' the second layer, you will defiantly pull the first layer up.These pencils granulate more then other brands. After washing over the colors, you can see some granulation in the back wash. This may be a pro for some people, a con for others.Over all these preformed extremely close to Albrecht Durer. Everything I pointed out sounds like a huge difference, but I took a lot of time to test these and uncover the differences, the only notable difference is some colors leave a light ghosting when washing over them, Albercht Durer pencils do not have this issue.Ultimately I got a larger set of Albrecht Durer because of the larger color range and I found most of their colors have excellent light fastness. I was not able to find a light fastness chart for these so I will need to do my own tests. I liked the way these pencils handle, I am keeping them for their unique granulation but not sure if I will be adding more to my collection.
