Recommended book and author.
I heard about this hook being recommended on podcasts and youtube videos I have been watching in order to learn powershell. I finally listened and bought the book and it is extremely comprehensive and the author does a great job in explaining “why” powershell was developed the way it was; really helps you understand all the madness lol.

Fantastic guide to Powershell by the guy who led the design of the language!
If you want to truly understand how Powershell works, how to use it and why the language was designed in the way that it was (e.g. why -eq and not '='?), then this is the book for you. This is a HUGE update from the 1st edition of this book and contains many new chapters covering features new to Powershell 2.0.The book is written with passion and flair. Bruce CLEARLY knows his subject and explains Powershell in a clear, easy-to-read, highly engaging manner that elevates this book into one of the all-time classic technical reference manuals along with Petzold's "Programming Windows", Kernighan & Richie's "C Programming Language" and everything by Scott Myers ;)THOROUGHLY recommended.

Another good in Action series book.
I picked this book up after taking the Microsoft Powershell 2.0 for Admins course. Armed with the basics, this book has been the perfect referance as I apply powershell into my daily work life.

Very in depth and well written guide. Although not the newest version of PS, it's a must have !
I consider this book to be the best on Powershell 2.0 with full detailed explanations, examples and easy to follow instructions, guides and a remarkable and uncanny delivery method by the author. I was surprised at the depth and although only halfway through the book it has helped me remarkably in my work to perform actions much easier than before and with such ease.I heard of this book/author through a colleague and I'm glad he shared this Gold Mine with me.Very well written at a great price.

MUST HAVE for PowerShell script developers....
I would have named this book "The Powershell Bible" - so so many times I've gone back to this trusty (yet huge) stack of pages to figure out why X won't work or "how in the heck do I even do Y?" Almost always the answers (or at least the foundation of understanding to ask the correct questions) is in this comprehensive guide. Often times I'm not even sure where to start and a few pages later I'm trying things out (and then of course, ask the internet communities in an intelligent, succinct way when I want to pull my hair out). :) This is not a sit down and read from cover to cover kind of book. It has elements of that, but I use it more of a reference. Overall, this is a MUST have for anyone who writes PowerShell scripts at anything beyond the very basic levels. It has paid for itself many times over in the past year and half while I learn this language.

A lot of good information, but sometimes difficult to use as a reference.
I knew nothing about PowerShell before reading this book and have managed to write some useful scripts using this book. On a few occasions, I have needed to figure out how to solve a specific problem and have had trouble figuring out where to look in the book. I think everything I've needed to know is in the book somewhere, but I have not been impressed with how it is indexed. This would not be a problem if I was going to read the book from cover to cover, but I don't have time for that now and am just trying to read the parts I need to write the scripts I want to write.I think the book covers a lot of material and does a good job of explaining it.

Why I love this book (as a Unix admin)
This book is written by one of the authors of PowerShell itself, and he approaches admin scripting in a way that just makes sense, in both the language and in the book. If you're forced to administer Windows machines, you *have* to have this book. But this quote in the preface completely sold me:In the early part of this decade, Microsoft commissioned a study to identify areas where it could improve its offerings in the server space. Server management, and particularly command-line management of Windows systems, were called out as areas for improvement. While some might say that this is like discovering that water is wet, the important point is that people cared about the problem.

Excellent for Learning Language Details
Excellent book. Provides information on the definition and syntactical structure of the PowerShell language. This is much more useful to someone wlho wants to learn the language than the "How to do It" books on the market.

Excellent manual for the powershell user
Written by one of the creators of the language, this book has the correct pacing, and all the information that you will need. While the book may not seem logically organised, each topic flows into the next one in a sensible fashion, and as well as learning how to do things in Powershell you also learn why you do them this way. The writing style is clear, concise, and informative and the book gives you a sufficient grounding to understand the entirety of the language.Teamed up with the Windows Powershell Cookbook Windows PowerShell Cookbook: The Complete Guide to Scripting Microsoft's Command Shell from O'Reilly for code examples, these two books will serve you well for almost all your Powershell needs.
