Hopi Kachinas: The Complete Guide to Collecting Kachina Dolls

Great book
Good well written and provides a great deal of information. I have read the book twice and still use it as a guide. The book provided pictures of a large number of kichinas and which is very helpful. Some might consider it a basic beginner book. And if it is it, all I can say, as a beginner, it told more than several books I had read on google combined. I think this book is well worth the money and will help me learn a lot about a field of collecting I knew little about.

KNOW THE PLAYERS!!
After my aunt died, I received her Kachina collection that I had ooh and aahed over for years. I had just a rudimentary understanding of them, and therefore needed to bone up. It's a good thing I did, since she started her collection in the 1940's and many of them are authentic antiques that I need to insure and keep safe [I still secretly smile remembering one of my cousin's snide, "Oh, you got the little dolls" remark]. This book also teaches the role and identity each one plays in their ceremonies. The book is truly complete in it's coverage, it's easy to read, understand, and to keep as a reference!!

Hopi Kachina book
This book is extremely helpful in identifying a wide range of Pueblo Indian kachinas and their reproduction as wood dolls, carved primarily by Hopi Indians in Arizona. It contains a helpful introduction to the history of Kachinas, and then proceeds to group them in many different categories with beautiful color photographs of the carved dolls in each grouping. Written descriptive paragraphs are included for each kachina illustrated. This is a must book for anyone who collects kachina doll carvings or who wants to learn more about this fascinating and very important part of Pueblo Indian sprituality.

Primary Resource For Identifying Hopi Kachina Dolls
After acquiring a collection of nine old kachina dolls (dating from the 1950s to the 1970s)I needed to be able to identify which spirit dancer each was meant to depict. This book was one of two that I bought to help me identify even the unusual ones I had bought, as well as learn about their background and get an idea of what the more modern Kachina Dolls look like...great photos!

My Friend Loved it!!
I bought it for a friend and she has been through brain surgery a few years ago, and was drawn to a Hopi Kachina collection that was placed in the facility where she lives. Every day she would go down to the case and look at the dolls and try to figure out how they were made and all the colours. When I gave her the books, she was so excited and told me how much she wanted them. She was so moved that she just cried.Lots of beautifully coloured pictures which she loves.

Great introduction to kachina collecting!
Nicely illustrated, this book gives a brief but complete introduction to Kachina figurines. I would have preferred to have the dolls be grouped a little differently than the book did but that is the only bad thing I can say about it. A very good reference work on this subject.

カチナ大辞典です。
Barton Wright
