In its natural habitat, the dawn redwood quickly reaches heightsup to 110' with a 25 foot spread. The original dawn redwood bonsai trees are hearty Conifers that have a lacey type of needled foliage on gracefully upswept branches. The needles are deciduous & quite pretty in the fall when the airy light green spray turns to yellow & then to bronze before shedding from the trees. Redwood bonsai trees make wonderful sights & this can be attributed to the way in which the redwood tapers away from its root flare which is broad & heavy. Dawn redwood bonsai trees feature trunks with reddish bark that are well grooved & strikingly straight & slim; if the trunk is especially large & heavy it will be well suited as a formal upright. Each live plant is shipped with the phytosanitary certificate as required by the USDA.

Great PRE bonsai material
First of all if you're expecting a bonsai tree go to Brussels bonsai website and find it there. This is pre bonsai which is why it comes in a nursery pot. An already styled version of this tree in a ceramic pot is available on their website. If you are looking for a good pre bonsai this is certainly for you. Just plant into the ground or a large pot for a season or two then retrieve and bonsai. Bonsai on!

Strong Tree, Poor Shape
I ordered and received a very healthy redwood with minimal shaping as expected. Unfortunately, it had almost no branches in the lower 60% of the plant and a huge number of shoots at the very top. It looks like pre-topiary more than pre-bonsai. It will be fine, but it's going to take much longer than expected to get the formal upright tree I wanted to create out of this material than I was expecting. I would probably purchase again as the tree is strong and well taken care of, but it looked nothing like the example tree shown with branches and limbs running down the entire trunk.

Not like picture, not what I expected
I did the wiring but this is not the size nor the way the tree should have been started as a bonsai. Did not expect a grafted tree that is not very large at all (about 15’’ high. This is not bonsai material nor is it bonsai stock. It’s basically a small to medium tree planted in a plastic pot.Anyone know how to take a grafted plant and get roots so the trunk is not so tall?

Great Tree, Not Bonsai, but Pre-Bonsai...
Great Pre-Bonsai Trees. Arrived in great shape as far as health goes. Person trimming was a little harsh, but it's ok as I plan on slip potting them into baskets for a year or two. They arrived well watered and looking fantastic, Thank you... However they were a little over watered, and the care booklets were destroyed... Hoping I can get another copy as I would like to know what YOUR recommendations are for care (I try and absorb a little advice from every nursery I purchase from)

Not Bonsai Ready
I received this in March so it was just beginning to come out of dormancy. (remember these trees go dormant during the winter) I have had it for 3 months and it is growing like crazy. I plan to trim it down and put it in a bonsai pot next winter/spring.

I love this tree!
One of my healthiest bonsais, new growth has been booming. Arrived healthy and well packed for such fragile branches and leaves. This is a thirsty tree with well draining soil so water it often!
