Excellent for beginners (like me)!
I have just started reading this book, and it has everything I want to know AND many things I didn’t know I wanted to know. After reading the first quarter of the book (and some browsing), I’m calling this book a winner. Obviously, it’s excellent for learning Japanese calligraphy with plenty of fun, interesting and helpful illustrations.

Excellent book for a beginner
Large kanji characters for practice. Haven't read the book yet but have been enjoying drawing calligraphy characters from the great layout of the book. Characters are about 6"x6", translation, how to say. Looks like a very useful book. Bellwwether Books delivered timely, and the 'used book' looks new inside but the outside cover only has a few nicked edges that might make it look used.

Solid
Shodo is one of my interests, being a student of it now for a couple of years. This book is very useful for learning the basics of hiragana and katakana. It goes stroke by stroke and does a good job of providing details about each. The order, along with the style is provided.I would have liked to have seen more kanji. Other than that, it is a useful resource.

Very Informative
I have a granddaughter who is studying Japanese in preparation for it being her college major. She has found this book very helpful in learning to make the proper brush strokes.

Great book for Japanese shodo students staring on kanji kaisho
I am a beginner Japanese shodo student. The book provides basics to get started, talks about different Japanese character sets like kanji, katakana and hiragana. The main focus is on kanji characters in kaisho, including the brush control and hand movement of basic brush strokes, then builds into simple kanji characters with stroke order for each character etc. Thus building the technique needed for dealing with complex multi stroke kanji characters.Bought this as a used copy as new ones are hard to find. Book arrived on time and was in a good shape, except some minor scratches on the back over.

Excellent Guide book
A really useful and easy to follow guide, concise but with a wealth of information. Has background to hiragana and katakana but concentrates on a detailed description of essential kanji. Mainly focuses on kaisho style, with emphasis on radicals and stroke order. Useful revision on the basics of stroke type and formation. Has concise mini-dictionary of common kanji used in shodo.
