Child in Time

The career of Ian Gillan from 1973-1983 is almost a complete mystery to those of us here in the states. What we didn't know was that he was actually doing some really cool, experimental things. This was the very first. While not being the best of his "Lost Years" period, this is still interesting enough for your attention. Taking a Jazz-Rock approach, this is a more subdued affair as a whole and it gives you a new appreciation for the man and his work. I admit, the more aptly titled band GILLAN, which would spin off from this collective was by far the better group with better material, this is still worth checking out.

If anyone wondered what happened to Ian Gillan after he left Deep Purple - this classic rock album shows Gillan in fine vocal form with musical chops. To Gillan's credit, he took off in a more intelligent prog-rock direction.There are some amazing Gillan era screams but more importantly good music. Gillan is the star of the family tree of Rainbow/Sabbath/Purple/Plant,and everyone that was part of that, They all shared the same musicians at onetime or another.You can look at Gillan's long line of Original Quality Rock, But he had it right from the start on this first album, daring arrangements, exotic treatments of old classics like THE TITLE TRACK.A great band featuring John Gustafson(Hard Stuff,Roxy Music),Ray Fenwick, Mark Nauseef, etc.Ian was always making pile driving rock,sure it gets funky, a little jazzy a little purple but its all quality rock,70's music is today's alternative music, he had it right in the 80's & 90's also...

Gillan is Gillan! Remember yung years. I olready reviewed that record is in very good condintion. Thanks to sellers.

Short but excellent CD, it clocks in at about 36 minutes which was about average in the mid 70's, It has good liner notes with even a note from Ian himself, I enjoyed the differant version of the song "Child in Time" it was like a slow Blues tune but was done very well, If you enjoy good blues/rock I highly recommend this cd.

Child in Time to me is the best song on the album. Ok music but it just doesn't give me the feel that Deep purple music does.

I had this album on scratchy used vinyl that I bought in 1980, and liked the album then, but the bad condition vinyl made it hard to appreciate Side 2. The CD version solves that problem. This album in my opinion is miles better than the three Purple albums released after he left the band in 1973. The drums are fantastic, and there's a bit of a funky/jazzy vibe to some of the tunes. 'Shame' and 'Lay me Down' are two of my favorites, and the last 3 tunes are what I would call a good 'Chill' ride. Highly recommended.

I bought this album when it first came out on 8 track and their were 2 songs that I loved-You make me feel so good by Ian Gillian and Martian Landscape by UFO,when you heard the Synthesizer and or Orgon on headphones on these 2 songs well all I can say was I was alot younger and it would give my buzz a boost.I found UFO's and the only place I found You make me feel so good was on Ian Gillian's Rarities 1975-1977 which was different but sastifying for all these years till tonite,thanks Amazon and I-Phone(iPod)ya'll brought back my childhood Thanks,and as far as my opinion goes both of these song are G R E A T songs,again my opinion only......

Ende 1975 entschloss sich Ian wieder aktiv als Musiker in Erscheinung zu treten. Seit dem Rauswurf bei Deep Purple versuchte er es mit diversen anderen Sachen. Er wollte ins Management einer Firma einsteigen, ein Hotel betreiben und startete ein Tonstudio [Kingsway Recorders Studio]. Das Tonstudio blieb bestehen, jedoch die anderen Sachen scheiterten.Ursprünglich als Shand Grenade geplant hörte Gillan jedoch glücklicher Weise auf sein Management. Die Ian Gillan Band war geboren. Als Musiker holte er sich den Gitarristen Ray Fenwick, den Bassisten John Gustafson. Die Keyboards bediente Mike Moran und der ehemalige Elf-Schlagzeuger Mark Nauseef war auch mit an Bord. Produziert wurde es von Roger Glover. Er spielte auch auf dem Album an einigen Stücken mit. Zwischen Dezember 1975 und Januar 1976 traf man sich in München in den Musicland Studios.Was über den Verstärker aus den Boxen kam war kein Hardrock. Es war Jazz-Rock der milderen Art. Hier und da mit einigen schönen Gitarrenlinien versehen, war es doch für den einen oder anderen extrem gewöhnungsbedürftig. Ian hatte ja schon seit seinem Rauswurf durch den Man in Black verkündet mit dem harten Sachen Schluss zu machen.Beginnen wir gleich mit der eigentlichen Überraschung. “Child In Time“ in quasi anti-Purple-Art aufgeführt als fast schon Musicalsong; ja das war schon ein Schock für mich. Vom Start bis zum Ende hat man das Gefühl etwas selbstverständliches komplett anders (vielleicht auch zerstört) zu hören. Hilfe muss der Böse auf seine alten Jungs gewesen sein! Erst beim zweiten und auch dritten Hören entfaltet sich die pulsierende Schönheit und die einfach coole Gelassenheit der Aufnahme. Löst man sich von alten Vorurteilen gefällt das durchaus. Mit den Purplern einfach undenkbar und so sicher auch nicht der Welt-Hit, welcher er mal war und immer noch ist.Gelassenheit ist sowieso das Stichwort dieser Platte. Ian lässt es fast schon grooven. “Lay Me Down“ startet fast schon funkig frech. Mit einer tollen Orgeleinlage jedoch rockt es dann doch los. Man merkt hier den Spaß der Beteiligten deutlich.Mit “You Make Me Feel So Good“ hört man einen typischen Gillan-Song dieser Zeit. Schwer und behäbig rockt er dahin. Einzig seine Schreie setzten hier Höhepunkte. Auch “Shame“ wird wohl ewig das sein was er ist; ein Füller ohne Höhen.“My Baby Loves Me“ hingegen behauptet sich später immer mal wieder. Der Song tauch bei verschiedensten Gelegenheiten aus dem Hintergrund hervor. Es jazzt an jeder Ecke und der Song lebt von seiner Stimme und der wirklich gut klingenden instrumentalen Begleitung. Ein einfach cooles Teil halt. Mit dem langsamen Song “Down the Road“ geht die erste Seite zu Ende. Der Gesang ist gut, das Stück leider durchschnittlich.Die zweite Seite startet mit dem schon angesprochenen “Child In Time“. Ist der Gitarrenpart vom ehemaligen Purple-Meilenstein in den Mischern verschwunden gleitet man 11 Minuten lang aus dem Album heraus. “Let It Slide“ ist hier Programm. Entspannt vom Anfang bis zum Ende gibt es hier fast Orchestrales fürs Ohr. Es beginnt wie eine Sinfonie im Intro und arbeitet sich dann zur Rocktitel hoch. Breite Backround-Chöre überfallen einen um danach wieder fast einzuschlafen. Behutsam aber nicht langweilig geht es vorwärts in der Klangwelt. Gitarre und Orgel geben sich Raum und entdecken die Langsamkeit. Letztendlich wacht die Band auf und es geht jazzig weiter. Das Ende lässt zwar auf sich warten aber folgt man entspannt den Tönen.Ein Album, welches nicht jeder verstand. Auch ich hatte Anfangs damit ein Problem. Mir fehlte der Zugang zur Musik und manche Passagen waren mir einfach zu anders. Mit dem Alter jedoch und ohne eine Festlegung auf bestimmte Musikarten gefällt mir das Album immer besser. Entspannt genieße ich die Klänge und lasse sie wirken.Ian war mit dieser Art der Musik deutlich der Zeit voraus. Die große Überraschung ist bei mir gelungen. Ich brauchte als Purple-Jünger Jahre bis ich die Schönheit des Gehörten in mich aufnehmen konnte. Schade, dass dieses Album nicht die Bühne erhielt, welche es verdient hätte. Der späten Reife Wegen bekommt diese LP auch vier statt nur drei Sterne.

Evidemment, à sa sortie, les fans de Deep Purple prirent mal cet album. Ils le prirent d'autant plus mal qu'avec deux démissionnaires de leur groupe fétiche (Gillan et Glover, ce dernier en temps que producteur et musicien additionnel) et un titre pareil, tout laissait à penser qu'on serait en droite ligne du groupe nourricier.Mais non, Gillan, enfin émancipé de la férule des deux solistes envahissants, se lance corps et âme dans un album funky et jazzy en diable. Un album qui a toujours deux faces à l'ère du cd avec une première partie essentiellement constituée de chansons courtes et une seconde avec deux baobabs, la reprise de Child in Time (comme promise par le titre) et les presque 12 minutes de jazz fusion de Let It Slide. Et si l'album a vieilli, il a surtout pris une patine qui lui sied à merveille et a conservé toute sa fraicheur.C'est donc, contrairement à ce que dirent les fans du pourpre profond à l'époque, et ce que maintiennent quelques mauvais esprits aujourd'hui, une pleine et entière réussite...
