Strong, reliable, should last a long time, blows away the old hand-held models!
50 pounds of pecans were no match for this nut cracker. We blew through them in no time, yielding a little over 20 pounds of pecan halves. If you don't have access to a commercial nut cracker, this is the way to go. We were given a 50 pound sack of pecans. Some were the big variety and a few were the small ones that almost look like hickory nuts. The adjustable part of this nut cracker made it possible to get a good result from them all!PRO's1. Sturdy2. Easy to use3. Adjustable4. Compact design5. 5-point contact6. Makes shelling a breeze7. No more squeezing in your hands!!!8. Easy clean upCON's1. Messy - But that's a givenPOINTERS:1. As others have suggested, use this on a tray. We used a cookie sheet.2. Wear eye protection3. Adjust it for most of the nuts you're cracking, lay the smaller ones to the side and go back and do them later.4. Set the cracker where you are facing the lever and pulling it toward you. At least for me, this seemed a better position than trying to go left or right with it.5. Expect to sweep or use a shop-vac to clean up the work area when done.6. Get a feel for it before you go pulverizing your pecans. Once you do a few you can tell how much you need to crack them or hard you need to pull the lever in order to get a good nut out of the shell.Overall, if you can't or don't want to take your pecans to get them commercially cracked, this is a great option. It worked seamlessly, and we got a great result. With three of us working at it (1 person cracking and 2 people shelling), we spent about 7 hours on 50 pounds of pecans. I think this would do well on harder nuts, too. The small ones we had that resembled hickory nuts had very thick shells but cracked well when we adjusted the cracker's screw for their size.

great value
I purchased this against the advice of my husband who was concerned it would be too flimsy. He is a builder and has a good eye for quality products. He was pleasantly surprised to find this to be perfect for our pecans. It takes a fraction of the time to crack them then using a classic nutcracker. We collect up to 40 lbs of pecans a year from our one huge pecan tree. Then we would give a lot of them away and only use them sparingly as it took so long to crack them. Now we are enjoying all kinds of pecan dishes thanks to this nut cracker and no longer avoid putting pecans in recipes because it takes so long to crack them. Highly recommended for pecans. Have not used it for other nuts. Probably would not work that well on black walnuts. Probably be great for English walnuts or filberts. It adjusts easily but we only need to set it at one size.

Excellent value on a useful tool
I purchased this device after reading extensively about it and others like it as well as other designs. I have, over the years used at least 3 other design types.First of all, this design type is, in my opinion substantially superior to any other type that I have used. I say this for several reasons:1.The leverage provides very adequate pressure to crack pecans.2. Removing the nut meats from the cracked shells is quite easy3. It is very easily adjusted to the size of the nuts.4. It has a nice hardwood base that can be C-clamped to a table or bench, thus securing it, however it works quite well without any clamp and is quite stable. Your choice...Having said that, it does have a couple of "cons". Like every other nut cracker that I have ever used, it must be used outside because the shells fly everywhere when the nuts are cracked. This includes the nut meats has well as the shells. In order to keep the cracked pecans "localized", I place my "non-leaver" hand around the nut and device and carefully apply pressure until the nut cracks. This requires some skill in order to avoid cracking ones fingers as well as the nut, but it is quickly learned. The feedback received when you do it wrong is excellent. The device is quite strong and appears well built, but is fairly loose, perhaps by design. The very loose tolerances may actually prevent bits of pecan shell from plugging the device. Another reviewer mentions that one must adjust the device for the nut size. Indeed, it is very easily adjusted, but constantly stopping to change the setting could be a problem for some. After about 15 minutes of experimenting, it dawned on me that the easy solution is to pick similar sized nuts from the your storage container. This is a skill that is also easily acquired. The percentage of whole nut meats that are extracted from this cracker will depend to a great extent on your technique. I get a large percentage of "quarters" with a few halves and a lot of smaller pieces which are very easily separated from the shells. This is because I choose to crack the nut into smaller pieces. You can greatly increase the number halves that you get by setting the adjustment wider, thus crushing the shell less, but extraction may be more time consuming. It's a trade off that you will have to make for yourself. Since I use most of my pecans fro cooking, the size doesn't much matter to me. I'm going to chop them up anyway. In short, this is a very well made nut cracker that should last a lifetime. It is inexpensive and works as much better than any other I have ever used. Excellent value!

Over 10 years later...and still using it
Are you tired of struggling to crack open nuts, only to end up with crushed shells and sore hands? Look no further than the Easy Pecan and Nut Cracker! As an avid nut enthusiast, I've tried my fair share of nut crackers, and I must say, this one truly stands out. I've been gathering pecans in a local park every season and spending hours shelling them, and this nut cracker gets the job done! I would definitely buy another.
