The Koran (Everyman's Library)

This volumn gives a balanced and objective view of the Koran. It was written before 9/11 and, therefore, has no hidden agenda.

This is what I want.

I bought this particular translation of the Koran because it is the one used by a former associate of Ayatollah Khomeini. Pikthall, the translator, was a 19th century Moslem and Koranic scholar who converted to Islam and made the translation while in the service of the Nizam of Hyderabad in India. My acquaintance, who was very advanced and renowned in his knowledge of the Koran at a young age, ended up on the wrong side of the political fence when the duplicity of Khomeini became apparent, was jailed, tortured, and barely escaped Iran with his life. He subsequently decided to follow Christ, renounce Islam, and travels the world warning people of the hidden truth about Islam, frequently quoting from Pikthall's translation to prove his statements.

It is not 'the Koran'. It is a translation only. No Arabic text, neither in Arabic script nor in roman.Not that it is bad because of that. And it has publisher's monogram with animal (dog?) picture on it that is also considered bad in Islam. And some Muslims may take it out right insult. I do not believe it is intentional but shows lack of being careful.Binding, paper print etc is good.I have just received the book and not read it yet. but just wanted to make it clearer for some who may be interested in this aspect of it. and that is why average stars. I may revise the review after reading it later on. It is not a review/comment on the content!

Islam and Muslims are today's headlines,and they are mostly not positive. This book is the book that Muslims believe and follow. For someone seeking information about the 2nd largest religion in the world and the fastest growing religion, why not go to the source directly? This book is one of three widely accepted english translations. It has helpful footnotes, etc. But again the author's goal is to translate the Quraan and not to incrporate his own thoughts, after all, just as the majority of Christian's believe the Jesus as divine, Muslims believe the Quran is the word of God. Do not forget other people's theories, opinions and feelings. Read them and read this book with an open mind that is true, and formulate your own.

This product is solid and came without frays or markings. However, the cover was different than expected and described. The cover I have is green and is not a sleeve. Other than that, the hardcover really makes a difference and it even has a built in cloth bookmark.

Nice binding and packaging of the book.....

This is a complete English translation by Marmaduke (Muhammad) Pickthall. You cannot go wrong in purchasing this copy of the Qur'an. Mr Pickthall fought much prejudice during the Victorian Era to produce this amazing interpretation of the most sacred book of Islam. Everyman s Library is great at reproducing classic books for anyone to read and love.

Standard Everyman production quality, will last you a lifetime. The text is clearly translated with introduction provided to the different books within the Koran. The only thing I would have preferred be done differently is a more clear introduction to the text. The intro is a little dated and not as clear as it could be. But, many people do not read the intro's anyway.
