state hospital life
i was pleasantly suprised by how fast this arrived in the mail, plus, it was in excellent condition.i haven't totally read the book. i have glanced thru and read bits and pieces..what i've read i really enjoyed.i worked there from '72 to '75 when i was facing being laid off in the first wave. i transferred down to oakdale center in lapeer, mi.i never thought of takin photos or videos when i worked there. as a traverse citian, i figured it would always be there.

Not what I expected at all.
I received this book yesterday and was anxious to start reading last night. First off, let me start by saying I never give reviews. I think I should start. I am an avid reader and was beyond disappointed. This book is all over the place! Many things are repeated, and not really in an order where they make much sense. I love to get lost in books, but this one you really had to pay attention! Not what I expected at all. I visit Traverse each year and was excited to start this read. I am surprised, and now confused, at the great reviews I had read before purchasing. I've never wanted to return a book until now.

Phenomenal! Highly Recommend!
A far cry from the horror stories associated with psychiatric institutionsof the past, Mr. Earl Steele shares with us his heartwarming experiences of working at Traverse City State Hospital and the softer side of theinternal activities between the patients and staff. Kristen M. Hains paints the full picture with her wonderful way with words. The two,(Earl E. Steele & Kristen M. Hains) have produced an exceptional historybook for everyone to enjoy!

fascinating history of a mental health institution, it's founder, and personal glimpses of some staff and patients
The book tells the history of the Traverse City State Hospital in both text and photographs. The text is very informative and fascinating. The photographs enhance the written information. Anyone in the mental health field and non-professionals interested in the history of psychiatry will find this book highly informative.

The title should have been, Earle Steele's life at the Traverse City State Hospital. There was very little information about the institution or patients. It is all about Earle Steele growing up on the grounds and eventually working there. Where the author came up with the title, I have no clue. The book was a short, disappointing thing if your quest was to learn more about the hospital/institution. I am sorry to have spent money to buy this book.
