In the mid 1980s, seventeen-year-old Vicki Maloney is randomly abducted from a suburban street by a disturbed couple. As she observes the dynamic between her captors she quickly realizes she must drive a wedge between them if she is to survive. Hounds of Love is an exercise in expertly-crafted tension, offering a bold, challenging debut from writer/director Ben Young.

Not The Film Described
The film described was of a kidnap victim who detects and utilizes psychological fault lines between her abductors to escape. If you want to see /that/, try the 1986 /Ruthless People/./This/ film is an unremittingly harsh depiction of a couple who kidnap, abuse, murder, and bury 17-year-old girls. At one point the parents of the current victim are being assured by the police detective that their daughter has not been seized but has merely run away. During this, the husband is looking an an entire bulletin board filled with frantic fliers asking for help finding such girls. Apparently, the police believe that this is the Back of Beyond and that any girl who vanished /must/ have departed for whatever passes for a Big City in Australia.Fortunately for our protagonist, the villains are beginning to fray around the edges and are already on their way to self-destruction. Her help is not needed, which is good, because she doesn't do anything to help the process along. She just happens to be there. So, if you an unremittingly nasty film about unremittingly nasty people, this is for you.If you want to be entertained, the aforementioned /Ruthless People/ is quite hilarious (being a comedic kidnapping story including a character said to be, possibly, the dumbest person on the face of the planet).

Not for the faint hearted.
Phew!!! Relentlessly grim although luckily most of the nasty goings on happen off screen but there are enough visual clues to paint a vivid, ghastly picture. The two female leads are nothing short of astonishing and the film leads up to a level of tension that is almost torturous. It's terrifying and all too believable. For adventurous film lovers only.

All that buildup for an ending that falls on its face
Warning! This review contains spoilers for the film! There's a lot to like in the first half of this film. The casting was done well, the composition of many of the shots is unnerving and surreal, and it is a genuinely nerve-wracking film. Right up until the end. It feels as if the director simply didn't know how to end the film, and just threw something together in an afternoon of shooting. Characters take a total 180 from previously stated goals, our protagonist effectively lucks out of the situation, and it simply... ends? It seems to attempt to absolve a character that we know has done many terrible things previous to the first scene. All intelligence leaves the room, and all the buildup gasps out, leaving a limp shred of the script behind. I feel almost cheated of my investment for the first 50-75% because the ending is so laughable that myself and my girlfriend were chuckling at the screen. Not exactly the emotion the film was going for, I'd wager. Save yourself the $2.99 and rent something better.

Deep Psychological Suspense
Always disturbed with great suspense (like one's supposed to) when watching a great Australian film. This was really good. Acting was spot on and the story laid out really well. Definitely worth renting.

Great addition to the genre, once again by Australia. Well done!
Scary af. Period. Very disturbing film, beautifully shot. The acting, spot on. A very realistic look at was it looks like behind the walls of abduction. Kudos to the director. The direction was the first thing that grabbed me and wouldn't let go.

Absolutely hypnotic.
Absolutely horrifying subject matter. Flawless performances. You will be glued to your seat, unable to look away until the very end. Not for the faint of heart.

only okay. not as violent as I've expected Australian horror movies to be. the "brave audiences will be rewarded" that you see in the trailer did not, in my experience. pay off.

The sexual abuse of a young juvenile
Australia is a vast continent with a population of around, just under 25 million (approx. 3 times the size of London), but nevertheless seems to throw out its fair share of crazy people and serial killers. Recent films from down under that spring to mind 'Wolf Creek' (1, 2 & 3), 'The Loved Ones' (2009) and 'The Snowtown Murders' (2011).'Hounds of Love' is reported to be loosely based on a real-life incident and is set in Perth, West Coast of Australia in 1987.A suburban couple have a liking for threesomes and go around targeting juvenile schoolgirls to satisfy their warped sexual cravings. They record their acts on video and have this material to watch whenever they get bored. The girls are chained to the bed and when the couple get tired of them, are killed and buried somewhere out in the outback. For me the film reminds me of the murders of Ian Brady & Myra Hindley who had similar sexual depravities for young children, back in the 1960's in England. In 'Hounds of Love,' however, the film does not focus on all their earlier victims, but on the capture and torment of their latest victim played by Ashleigh Cummings, who being a typical teenage girl, and wanting to do her own thing, doesn't listen to her mum to stay in at night but sneaks out to make her way to a friend's party. As fate would have it, and as she is reminded by one of her captor's played by Emma Booth in the role of Evelyn White, a little later on (she herself being a an earlier victim of her older partner), "You should have listened to your mum."This is not a film that is graphic in a bloody way but, at times feels like a psychological drama that could easily be turned into a stage play, as so much of the film is shot within the suburban home of the couple. It is a well made and disturbing film but not in an exploitation way. The film reminds me of the American film 'Chained' (2012) which also centred on a serial killer going out looking to kidnap potential victims (mainly women) to bring them back to his home to chain up, satisfy his sexual desires & then killing them.

Dreadful Aussie 'B' movie
A psychopathic couple get off on kidnapping, torturing, raping and killing young teenage girls. The story focuses on one particular one and her trauma. There's really no need to say anymore as I'm dumbfounded why anyone would want to make such a film in the way of entertainment as it's just dire from beginning to end. Also, the terrible director has the cheek to use a classic Joy Division song, 'Atmosphere' as the outro in an effort to give his garbage some credence.
