Pterostilbene is more easily absorbed by the body
Since having two small strokes in Dec 2015, I have been researching supplements that improve brain health, cognitive function, and perhaps help keep dementia/Alzheimer's at bay. Pterostilbene keeps coming up in my research, as does Resveratrol. There hasn't been as much research done on Pterostilbene as has been done on Resveratrol. Pterostilbene is more easily absorbed by the body, but Resveratrol might have better anti-inflammatory properties. Pairing Pterostilbene with Resveratrol is ideal to ensure receiving all the benefits found in both. This product does just that, so that you don't have to take separate Pterostilbene and Resveratrol supplements.Pterostilbene is a sirtuin activating compound as well as an antioxidant. You've likely read a lot about antioxidants and how they enhance the body's immune system to fight against disease and the ravages of free radicals. Although there is a lot of information about sirtuin within the science community, it's not something that we who are not scientists would likely know much about. I have found a lot of information about what sirtuin is and what it does, all very science-y references that use a lot of big words that one also has to Google.Basically, sirtuin seems to change the chemistry in your body to help neutralize or slow down aging. It can be found in blueberries, grapes, almonds, peanuts, and other plant-based food sources. The amounts found in food are miniscule, so one would have to eat a ton of blueberries and grapes in order to get the benefits. Or you can take a supplement, like these capsules.Pterostilbene is best when taken in a potent blend, such as this product which also contains Resveratrol. I have difficulty taking large, solid pills, but I found the capsules are relatively easy to swallow. With regard to the one-star review that states "No synthetic Pterostilbene powder" and "This is just crushed grape and blueberry powder as far as I can tell" I responded: "With all due respect, this is a natural supplement, not synthetic. Therefore, one would not and should not find any synthetic ingredients. This is a natural, concentrated blend of Muscadine grapes and blueberries, both of which produce Pterostilbene and Resveratrol. So yes, this is "crushed" or processed dehydrated grape and blueberry. And no, I do not work for this company. I've just done a large amount of research."I found the following information on the Internet regarding potency of Pterostilbene*:"While trans-pterostilbene may not be familiar, its sources–blueberries and grapes–certainly are. Like its cousin resveratrol, plants produce pterostilbene in response to injury and infection. Also like resveratrol, pterostilbene has a high level of bioavailability and offers similar protective effects. Additionally, research suggests pterostilbene may be more powerful than resveratrol. In fact, combining pterostilbene with resveratrol may pack a potent nutritional punch, helpful for supporting healthy cellular function.4 Benefits of Pterostilbene:Blueberries are one of the most readily-available sources of pterostilbene and are typically available year round. Wine also contains varying levels of this powerful compound. Here are 4 more reasons to add pterostilbene to your diet.1. Potent AntioxidantExperiments suggest pterostilbene has several important benefits. First and foremost, the compound acts as a powerful antioxidant. It also appears to bind to PPAR receptors, stimulating production of the compound. PPAR plays an important role regulating cholesterol and lipids in the blood. One study using animal models reported its success promoting normal triglyceride levels.2. Supports Normal Blood SugarNumerous studies have found blueberry consumption, particularly pterostilbene ingestion, supports already healthy blood sugar. In one study, 97 adults took a pterostilbene supplement for 12 weeks. At the end of the study, 67% of the participants had normal glucose levels.3. Rejuvenates Brain CellsThe antioxidant and soothing properties of pterostilbene helps brain cell health. Multiple studies have demonstrated pterostilbene supports motor function and cognitive abilities in adults suffering from memory changes.4. Like Red Wine, Pterostilbene Promotes LongevityTrans-pterostilbene is a bioactive chemical which has been shown to support cognitive health, normal blood sugar, and soothe irritation. In vitro and in vivo studies support pterostilbene’s therapeutic effects. The compound also acts as a caloric restriction mimetic, triggering the human body to release biochemicals such as adiponectin which promotes healing.Supplementing with Pterostilbene:To get a bigger serving of pterostilbene, you can eat a lot (a lot!) of blueberries, or you could also try a supplement. Most supplements will use trans-pterostilbene for its high bioavailability. Sold in individual formulations, the best overall benefits can be found in blends."*Source: Dr. Edward Group DC, NP, DACBN, DCBCN, DABFMPublished on November 4, 2014, Last Updated on February 1, 2016 with the disclaimer "These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
