If you have Hi-End DAC (Digital-Analog Converter) in your system i.e. the digital PCM (Pulse-Code-Modulation) sequence/stream, which is digitally encoded and compressed sound is not processing inside of your computer, but transferred outside for decoding, you have several options to connect DAC converter to the computer.1. Connect input circuits of DAC to S/PDIF coaxial output connector. 2. Connect input circuits of DAC to S/PDIF through fiber optical cable. 3. Connect input circuits of DAC to USB port.In all 3 cases PCM signal is formed by computer Sound CODEC according to computer clock synchro-sequence of pulses. But both of CODEC program and output clock are not perfectly synchronized with absolute earth timing. Operation system produced uncounted and unpredictable reaction on internal and external computer events. That caused unpredictable delays in the signal that must come out from computer ports (in ideal) strictly in absolute time. This event is named Jitter. Any clock mismatch between host and device (however slight) will result in an overrun or underrun condition.Result of jitter on sound is "floating" scene, smeared stereo localization, absence of depth, loosing of ear, or even jerky sound.Asynchronous ModeFor asynchronous operation, the Client (sink) provides explicit feedback to the source (USB). Based on this feedback,the source adjusts the number of bit samples that it sends to the sink.This feedback mechanism accommodates source/sink clock mismatch without requiring the sink device toimplement Phase Locked Loop feedback hardware to synchronize with the host clock.As the result, Source send to Client data adjusted in time according to Client request without loosing a bit.Then data collected inside of client sink will be send to DAC strictly synchronized to Client internal quartz stabilized master clock, totally free of jitter.Many of the buffer devices that provide asynchronous data exchange with USB port can operate with only bit depth 24 and sample rate 96 KHz, but this one accommodates 192 KHz which is highest sample rate foe PCM so far. In addition it works with more stable and faster USB3 port. Sound is excellent Hi-End. Absolutely no artifacts.
