Informative and Straight-Forward
Coming Through The Fog is a triumphant memoir of Tami Goldstein's personal journey as a parent whose daughter was eventually diagnosed with High-Functioning Austism, Asperger's Syndrome. Along with Heather, her daughter, Tami must take on a slow-moving medical institution with various diagnoses to weed out questionable "professional" opinions and useless medications."During these ten minutes, she didn't ask me a single question. She didn't look at or ask Heather a single question. This woman told me that I was a bad mother who was using Heather like a specimen and that she didn't have AS... I asked her if she had read the medical records which I had delivered from the Waisman Center. She informed me that she didn't have to read them... I received a letter from the Therapist/Social Worker terminating therapy 'due to the medical complexity of the case'."This book is a glimpse at a deeply tangled and nightmarish process. Heather's education was also an uphill battle. Not being diagnosed properly, and having had very little supplemental data and progress, the school system was apt to grade Heather on a contradiction of information. Eventually, after being diagnosed properly and even given the proper paperwork and diagnosis, the administration refused to acknowledge Heather's issues; instead, opting to find loopholes in a medical professional's usage of certain terminology. There is a sense of frantic scrambling as Tami and her husband try to find a way to get navigate their way through an incredibly daunting learning curve.Tami Goldstein's writing is straight-forward and informative.Read full review here:bookendchronicles DOT blogspot DOT com

Great Informational Book!
I received my book today and already read it! This book is very informative. I work at a school district in the special education department and after reading this book it gave me some ideas to incorporate into my job. I commend this mom for being an advocate for her daughter and never giving up when times got rough. This is a great tool for other parents, caregivers, school workers or anyone who has contact with a child with Autism and Sensory Processing Disorder. While each case is different it gives you hope that with the right people and tools anything is possible! Thanks for sharing your story!

Coming Through the Fog
Tami wrote this book from her heart, not only for herself and Heather, but to try and help as many children with Autism and their families as she can. This book is an explanation of Tami's journey to help her daughter and about never giving up hope or faith that you will find an answer. Tami gives wonderful resources so that anyone reading this book will at least know where to start looking for answers. While I understand every family and every child with Autism is different, if you have a child with Autism I highly recommend reading this book for the reassurance, guidance, and hope it will give you.

Coming Through the Fog
As a mother of a high functioning son, who I would assume could now be described as being in Functional Recovery; I am always interested in reading what I can about children on the Autism spectrum. All our experiences are so different. Some parents practically stop their own lives to take on getting their child the best possible help and taking up the call to deal with doctors, schools, therapists, etc. I know I couldn't do that so am very thankful for what we could do with my son and I'm very proud of where he has come from and what he has now accomplished.Probably one of the best things about this book is learning a bit about the different therapies, tests, etc. that are now available to children. I wish the book would have gone into more detail describing some of the more useful therapies. At least though they were named which would allow parents to look them up on line to get more information. The book also seemed to be out of sequence as the story unfolded which made it hard to follow. I felt like we heard more about the difficulty the mom was having with Heather's school districts than actually about Heather. I think better editing would have made for a tighter book that made it easier to follow the story.I also think that we were denied parts of the story that would have helped us understand what Heather was going through during her early years. In the timeline in the back of the book, we find out that during her life Heather had at least eight surgeries but why and what for is missing. I assume the author was trying to shield Heather's privacy, but I can't think of any series of surgeries that wouldn't have affected her autism in a negative manner, as any child going through 8 surgeries would certainly be impacted and not necessarily for good. Also how mom and dad deal with an autistic child going in and out of surgery might have been helpful information to those of us that also have to put an autistic child through surgery. Handy hints are always helpful. One thing I was extremely curious about is what kind of grant Heather got to buy her home. How does she maintain a home with all the costs of home ownership on 25 hours of work a week? How she copes as an adult would have been a very interesting chapter in the book and one that would give some encouragement to parents still struggling in the early stages of this syndrome.

A lot of bang for your buck!
In this one book, the reader gets 1) to read an uplifting success story about a mother's undying love and steadfast determination to help her daughter, 2) an education with realistic parental tips to aide and enlighten their journeys, and 3) multiple types of resources at one's fingertips. It is obvious that the author has now dedicated her life to helping others in similar circumstances and this book is a beautiful example of reaching out to people everywhere with her heart-felt intentions. Kudos!

fascinating
This book is a real, raw, memoir about the struggle of Autism and the hard work and love that helped left the fog. Compelling and fascinating to learn about a mothers' dedication to helping her daughter through anything and the success the duo have had educating others about functional recovery. A must read!
