Description
- The Lined Sea Horse is a species of seahorse found in diverse aquatic beds and can be found in the Western Atlantic and Carribean Sea. Its subtle and sophisticated coloration varies within the species, including a myriad of reds, browns, and greens.
- Like other sea horses, the Lined Sea Horse has a head angled at right angles to its body and swims upright using its dorsal fin to propel and its pectoral fins to steer. As a slow-moving swimmer, it effortlessly moves throughout the tank, is well camouflaged while also enjoying perching on marine plants and stationery items in your aquarium.
- Like all sea horses, the female inserts eggs into the male's brood pouch (one is reminded here of the pouch of a kangaroo), then the male fertilizes the eggs inside his brood pouch and carries the brood throughout the 21 day gestation period, at which time the male gives birth to fully formed miniature offspring. The male's role in reproduction is unique in the animal kingdom and fascinating.
- All in all, the Lined Sea Horse, peaceful and hardy, provides hours of enjoyment to marine enthusiasts and is certainly a favorite of children.
